Boro fans at wolves 1981

When we eventually got through our first QF V Derby County I cried like a baby, it was way to an emotional moment and our first FA cup final well it was so overwhelming. We have been through 3 QF now, and still they slag Gibson off FFS. Older Boro fans will appreciate just how difficult it was as a Boro fan, and we did b***r all in the grand scheme of football.

We did "Overcome" in the end
I’m a similar vintage I think, perhaps not quite as long in the tooth as I can’t claim all four in person. But the period is the reason I always say my greatest moment as a fan wasn’t Cardiff, or Eindhoven, or any of the Wembley trips, or any of the promotions. It was the Baseball Ground that day, when that second went in and we could finally, finally, say we’d got further in the FA Cup than Redcar and as far as York City.

I was absolutely choked when that 2nd went in. I read Purnell's football encyclopaedia from being a kid, often a Christmas box.
It used to really rile me that historically we had been nowhere near the cup final (it was so glamorous) as a kid watching the FA final important and worthy of the 7am tv start with two bottles of Alpine pop and some crisps).
I like this - I felt exactly the same at Derby. saying you have put it well is an under statement
"could finally, finally, say we’d got further in the FA Cup than Redcar and as far as York City."

Was their 100% thought we would win, couldn't find the car afterwards to compound our misery, did eventually, long journey back

...
I was at The Liverpool QF loss was a disappointment because the cup run was good but I think we expected to be beaten 55k there and I was in the Anfield Terrace in the upper seats looking across at the kop, it was an incredible sight to behold, probably only surpassed by Aston Villas holt end for size. I was at the 0-0 away league game V Liverpool that season too in the Anfield Road end.
After the QF game there was hell on for ages, I was sat on the park and ride bus taking us back to the coach park, and was worried for a lad booted half to bits in a shop doorway. it was really vicious.
The Beggs bus I travelled to the Liverpool game on had its windows smashed and without telling us it went back to Teesside after it dropped us off. We were told by the police it was parked on the other side of Stanley Park and got marched over there by the police. When the coach wasn't there we got marched to another road with coaches parked on and this continued for an hour. We got battered from pillar to post by fans coming out of houses, housing estates and the police themselves and only escaped after four of us jumped in a taxi and got it to take us to the edge of the city so we could hitch hike home. We struggled to get a lift and I finally arrived home Sunday afternoon. I was aged 15 at the time.

Kin hell Norman bit of nightmare that, it was pandemonium, there was fighting everywhere. We luckily got to the park and ride bus to the coach park and were escorted out.

We got there in car as one of the specials arrived it was chaos I nearly got trampled on by copper on horse as they tried to cope with volume of Boro fans

Wolves was my 4th FA Cup QF loss, we really fancied our chances.

It really was the beginning of the end, we never really recovered and the support just gave up, it was a very apathetic in the area. Only the die hards stayed the journey.

My first QF Birmingham for the 1-0 loss Bob Hatton scored,, again we really fancied our chances as well. ended up in tears on the bus.

I was at the home game V Orient the old fella moaned at me wanting to go to the away game with mates on a coach. It was a school night and it was exam study time, also my brother couldn't make it, he was at Newcastle University. I was absolutely crest fallen when we lost that game, looking at the goals on the news I blamed Platty - but never mind.

Wolves I felt we were far better team at home, away I felt we looked the stronger team going in to extra time, Richards and Bell, hmmph.

We should have done what Spurs did when they played them whacked Andy Gray every time he jumped up for the ball, I don't think he made the replay against them.

Great post, I could have written the same story.
In the anfield road end for the Liverpool game, still a schoolboy with my mate (no seats at that end at the time btw). Quite an experience for the first away game without my Dad.
Loads going off with the locals in that end with no proper segregation. We positioned ourselves in the middle of all the Boro hardnuts for protection. Fortunately no bother on the way out. We were bussed in and out on local busses with official coaches parked up in a depot a few miles away. This was done to avoid a repeat of the coaches getting smashed up earlier in the season.
I remember being surprised at how quiet the kop was until they scored.

My main memory of the home game is some Boro lads holding up a Wolves scarf as the spoils of a battle I hadn't seen, heading for the rec and saying, "We're gonna burn it in the park .."

Thanks NB. The Anfield Road End was behind the goal and had no seats it ran parallel to Anfield Road itself and was the normal away end.

The Anfield Terrace was a terrace that went to the left of the Anfield road end (where the players come out) main entrance. That was the seats I was talking about, As a Season Ticket Holder you always got first dibs on FA cup tickets, so me and my brother got seats as we sat in the North Stand at AP .

Ah fair enough, didn't realise there were Boro fans in that part.
It was just pay on the day for us. Unfortunately hundreds of Boro were locked out and a lot walked over into the Everton Derby game. Can't believe it wasn't made all ticket.

Didnt realise it wasn't all ticket myself, or that any were locked out !

Once we reached the first division with big jack, the first season up there MFC hiked the prices up and gave my old fella a shorter time span to pay for mine and my brothers ST. I think he could pay them over 4 payments and they reduced it to 2.
Pre 74/75 We used to get cup tickets sent in the post, and if we didnt use them we sent them back ,that stopped:)

So he rang Harry Green the club Secretary and complained, and Mr Green said "we are in the first division now and need to adopt first division ways" I don't think we had had our phone very long at the time and the old fella was going on about how they treat Mannion and they are a disgrace etc.

My dad always bought our ST until I was 21 ( bit embarrassing I know I was still an apprentice) but he always had a dislike of the club hierarchy with a passion.

Happy Days.

It was the last time that they allowed Everton and Liverpool to play home game at the same time. So there were 4 sets of fans there at the same time
On the way to the ground we noticed Liverpool and Everton fans stood happily with each other at bus stops, which seemed a little strange back then.

The following year? 0-0, was there too, maybe not the game you mean? I thought they was about 1k
I went to the one you're talking about the season after, for some reason they put on a football special, could have carried 100s but there was next to no one on it, very bizarre.

I was in the Kemlyn Road stand right next to the Kop with my Dad. We only had a small block and we got showered with coins and other stuff from the Kop. Dad got hit on the bridge of his nose by a coin.
Absolute bedlam outside. First time I'd seen Dad concerned on the way back to our car.
I remember thinking the Kop was quiet and over-rated.
Alf Wood scored, the ball blatantly in, but not given.
Ginger **** Fairclough.
The start of my life long hatred of all things scouse.
