Betty Boothroyd RIP

Aged 93. Top woman. Held the great and the good to order...... and kicked Ian Paisley out of parliament.

Another piece of trivia is that Betty Boothroyd was preceded by Maurice Foley as MP for West Bromwich. He was a Billingham lad and an electrician apprentice at ICI Billingham. He left his seat in West Brom to take up a role in the new EEC

Sad news she was a woman of conviction and a pioneer as the first female speaker.

I was fortunate enough to meet her as part of a school trip to the House of Commons in 97. She was brilliant, and I think she enjoyed entertaining a bunch of state school kids from Teesside for an afternoon. I always remember it.

One of whom was Horace King, a Stockton lad who went to Stockton School, later Grangefield Grammar, where his picture had pride of place in the entrance foyer.

I suppose at 93 Betty did alright then
