“On the night of August 12-13, 1961, East German soldiers laid down more than 30 miles of barbed wire barrier through the heart of Berlin. East Berlin citizens were forbidden to pass into West Berlin, and the number of checkpoints in which Westerners could cross the border was drastically reduced.”

East Germans were told it was done to stop West Germans flooding into their glorious East Germany for a better life. I had to laugh when that was said by the mother in the film, Goodbye Lenin. Its lovely film if you have not seen it. East Germany comes across as living the life of 100% Poundland shopper and going purely on camping/walking holidays - you have everything but its cheap, you never get into debt and despite all the spying there is a sort of purity of spirit. While the West has everything you sell your soul to get it.
