Alex Scott has won praise for wearing the OneLove armband while presenting coverage of England's opening game against Iran at the Qatar World Cup.

On Monday morning, the England and Wales FAs backed down and decided not to wear OneLove armbands after global football governing body FIFA threatened "sporting sanctions" for captains Harry Kane and Gareth Bale.

The pair had planned to wear the distinctive armbands as a sign of their support of gay rights and in support of human rights, along with Belgium, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland. They were told they would be handed yellow cards if they did so.

Homosexuality is illegal in Qatar and controversy has surrounded the country's record on human rights.

However, pundit Scott made a statement live on air as she sported the armband while presenting coverage ahead of Monday's game.

The former Arsenal and England player was celebrated on social media for her stance.

"Alex Scott you legend," wrote Ali Tweedale.

The Pride in Football account - a network of LGBT+ fan groups across the UK - tweeted: "England may not be wearing the #OneLove armband, but AlexScott is right now on BBC.

"This is more than just LGBTQ+ rights, this is Human Rights."

It's a very high hypocritical horse, that some of these commentators are pedalling.

Their fury is only matched only by their ability to fill their pockets, no matter how grubby the cash is.
Thats a good point.(y)
But the likes of Alex Scott is not a high-profile "celebrity" and is clearly intent on making a clear unequivocal statement.
Many commentators - Lineker for one - are unprincipled hypocrites.
Likewise Beckham - who is a complete fraud - plays to the audience and waves the flag.
Money is like schitt - the more you touch it, the more it rubs off.

That is the sort of argument that the FIFA guy would probably come out with - the everyone is a hypocrite so keep quiet argument.

So instead of going over there and sticking two fingers up to FIFA in the course of their duty and highlighting the issue in a high profile way on national TV, they should instead have stayed at home and be replaced by someone else, and no one would have noticed.

I expect the Quatari guys to be having a word in the BBC’s ear!
Would not be surprised if they take away her accreditation & ban her from the stadium, though parasitic as they are I think deportation is imminent..

Qatar & FIFA, morally bankrupt.

FA's of Europe & others need to consider possibility of a new organisation.. FIFA is not worthy..

Trouble is...neither are the F.As of Europe:(

so Alex Scott hates the Qatar regime - hates the abuse of human rights - hates the conditions that migrant workers have had to live (if they're lucky) through & hates the criminalisation and sentences for being identified as belonging to the LGBQAI2+ community.

yet she was still prepared to take the job for money on their lands.

i'm at a loss to see where her principle is, other than being paid well and taking a 4 week jolly abroad to watch some football and not at her own expense - im afraid sainthood is still a little way off at this stage.

do you know that Qatar are now the 10th largest landowners in the UK ! - the gifts, property and top end arms deals are very close to home - British MP's have received more 'gifts' from Qatar this year than all of the other 15 country's who have done the same, combined.

She's not being paid by Qatar and has protested their views and the situation surrounding the World Cup very prominently.

As a gay woman, I'm sure she finds their laws abhorrent.

Unless you're wanting the BBC to film from home, not sure what you were expecting.

Pundits were going to go out there.
