Band of Brothers

“One day my grandson said to me, grandpa were you a hero in the war? And i said to him no I'm not a hero, but I have served in a company full of them.”

I always seem to have dust in my eye at this point, not sure why.
someone is chopping onions in our house

I've not seen it TBH.
A while back I was getting a bit fed up with the "how the good ole USA won WW2 Single handed" films that were being churned out by Hollywood.
I'm not really into binge watching box sets either, but I do intend to give it a watch.

This is a fairly accurate portrayal of the 10 months following D-day. From about September '44, the UK combined forces with the 101st and it is a shame that doesn't come across in the series, but just imagine some of the American accents are really British!

Another recommendation here. I watched it again with my other half thinking she would hate it, but at the end of the series she sat and watched it all again. Amazing cast, amazing budget, great writing and it does those who fought and then picked up the pieces in Europe a great honour.

The Pacific is amazing at showing what sheer hell the war in the Pacific was for fighters on all sides, but the characters aren't as developed.

I can also recommend a German series called Generation War which shows the war through the eyes of a group of German friends.
Piccadilly, that footage looks amazing, I will give it a watch, dont mind sub titles TBH

Our World War is on iplayer and I can highly recommend. Its a 3 part docuseries about WW1.

Also, Kajaki, if you want some true story, edge of the seat stuff. Its about 3 Para stuck in a minefield in Afghanistan.

Looks like its available
No problem - I've no idea where you might get your hands on the full 3 part series at the moment without forking out for a DVD but it was originally broadcast on BBC4, I think, so you might get lucky on the iPlayer.
Looks like its available on Arrow TV, part of Amazon Prime. Think I'll be using up my 7 day free trial to cover it

Over the weekend I have sat and watched the ten episodes of Band of Brothers for the umpteenth time and never get sick of it. The horror of war is captured and so is the bond that can only be formed by people going through such horrors. What these guys went through for our freedom is unbelievable and at times you feel like you are going through it with them.

Was there ever a box set made that is better put together than this show.

I have spent a lot of time in Normandy visiting the landing beaches, battlefields and cemeteries. I never fail to be moved by the heroic deeds of the young men & women who gave up so much for the freedom others.

At the end I love the following quote from d*ck Winters: “One day my grandson said to me, grandpa were you a hero in the war? And i said to him no I'm not a hero, but I have served in a company full of them.”

I went to Normandy a couple of years ago, utterly mesmerising and seems to be full of never ending tales of heroism and sacrifice. Also visited Munich and the Eagles Nest the same year, mainly inspired by B.O.B.

Love the 1st series documentary with 6 episodes which starts of with the invasion, then episode 2 is the battle of Caen, etc, great viewing, great stories of heroes

This is without doubt one of the most intense films I've ever seen.

Now watching battle of Caen, really gripping stuff
Listening to the veterans & seeing some of the video footage is how did they get through that

Generation war is extremely good. Gives a different perspective or you could argue the same perspective from the other side. The way the Jews were treated, horrific and unimaginable.

Another shout out for Kajaki. I shudder to think what that was like to experience for real.

The pure dread of being stuck in the middle of a minefield knowing one wrong move could result in death or serious injury.

Not sure podcasts are everyone’s thing but anyone into war history should check out Hardcore History by Dan Carlin.

It’s absolutely fantastic. He’s not a historian, just a very enthusiastic amateur but does the reading and then tries to tell the story of a conflict through all the books he’s read - some episodes go on for like six hours because he gets so into it. By a street the best podcast I’ve ever heard. Would recommend Ostkrieg about the German invasion of Russia and the incredible WWI series he did called Blueprint for Armageddon.

Great posts on Band of Brothers. Such a powerful bit of TV, so well made and well cast. Have also watched at least five times and love playing spot the background Hollywood superstar, Tom Hardy and Simon Pegg both have tiny parts!
