He was great in homeland also
someone is chopping onions in our house“One day my grandson said to me, grandpa were you a hero in the war? And i said to him no I'm not a hero, but I have served in a company full of them.”
I always seem to have dust in my eye at this point, not sure why.
This is a fairly accurate portrayal of the 10 months following D-day. From about September '44, the UK combined forces with the 101st and it is a shame that doesn't come across in the series, but just imagine some of the American accents are really British!I've not seen it TBH.
A while back I was getting a bit fed up with the "how the good ole USA won WW2 Single handed" films that were being churned out by Hollywood.
I'm not really into binge watching box sets either, but I do intend to give it a watch.
Piccadilly, that footage looks amazing, I will give it a watch, dont mind sub titles TBHAnother recommendation here. I watched it again with my other half thinking she would hate it, but at the end of the series she sat and watched it all again. Amazing cast, amazing budget, great writing and it does those who fought and then picked up the pieces in Europe a great honour.
The Pacific is amazing at showing what sheer hell the war in the Pacific was for fighters on all sides, but the characters aren't as developed.
I can also recommend a German series called Generation War which shows the war through the eyes of a group of German friends.
No problem - I've no idea where you might get your hands on the full 3 part series at the moment without forking out for a DVD but it was originally broadcast on BBC4, I think, so you might get lucky on the iPlayer.Piccadilly, that footage looks amazing, I will give it a watch, dont mind sub titles TBH
Cheers, I may get lucky thenNo problem - I've no idea where you might get your hands on the full 3 part series at the moment without forking out for a DVD but it was originally broadcast on BBC4, I think, so you might get lucky on the iPlayer.
Looks like its available on Arrow TV, part of Amazon Prime. Think I'll be using up my 7 day free trial to cover itNo problem - I've no idea where you might get your hands on the full 3 part series at the moment without forking out for a DVD but it was originally broadcast on BBC4, I think, so you might get lucky on the iPlayer.
Over the weekend I have sat and watched the ten episodes of Band of Brothers for the umpteenth time and never get sick of it. The horror of war is captured and so is the bond that can only be formed by people going through such horrors. What these guys went through for our freedom is unbelievable and at times you feel like you are going through it with them.
Was there ever a box set made that is better put together than this show.
I have spent a lot of time in Normandy visiting the landing beaches, battlefields and cemeteries. I never fail to be moved by the heroic deeds of the young men & women who gave up so much for the freedom others.
At the end I love the following quote from d*ck Winters: “One day my grandson said to me, grandpa were you a hero in the war? And i said to him no I'm not a hero, but I have served in a company full of them.”
Just put Generation War online in Google. You'll find it. I'd highly recommend it.Cheers, I may get lucky then
It was on Netflix until recently, but now taken off.Just put Generation War online in Google. You'll find it. I'd highly recommend it.
Band of Brothers is in a different league though
Our World War is on iplayer and I can highly recommend. Its a 3 part docuseries about WW1.
Also, Kajaki, if you want some true story, edge of the seat stuff. Its about 3 Para stuck in a minefield in Afghanistan.
Generation war is extremely good. Gives a different perspective or you could argue the same perspective from the other side. The way the Jews were treated, horrific and unimaginable.Another recommendation here. I watched it again with my other half thinking she would hate it, but at the end of the series she sat and watched it all again. Amazing cast, amazing budget, great writing and it does those who fought and then picked up the pieces in Europe a great honour.
