'You would have to be crazy to walk around Millwall or Chelsea wearing colours, let alone a slogan daubed butchers jacket ...'

But the ICI hard hat would come in handy!

Another factor in the decline, not mentioned. Football Special trains became a total nightmare. Rather than making the trains safe with more Transport Police etc, British Rail would deliberately use derelict stock for specials, knowing it would get trashed.

I was one and kuepper was another, and I was one of the original committe that set up the Ayresome Angels
Almeria2005, were the AA the ones who wore white lab coats in the holgate, I remember them when I started going to matches in 1971

Bought them about 20 years ago along with the AA diary & AA pennant, who I got Willie Whigham, John Hickton & Hughie Mcllmoyle to sign

E74 - Thank you for the interesting pictures.

A2005 - Respect from RW for helping to organise the AAs and breaking new ground. They probably still talk of invasion of Angels in Workington today.

In the style of the Ayresome Angels, maybe in 2020 there should be the "Riverside Rogues"!

My first season was 66 - but only as a town vagabond who used to pitch up and listen outside the Holgate waiting for the gates to open before the end. The adrenalin pump from running into the ground to catch the last 10 mins will live with me forever.
Spent a few years after that going in the boys end and jumping the wall before graduating to a 'squeeze' to get in the Holgate.
The smell of fags and booze on the back of my head as I was pushed into the gate with a big gadge behind behind me

Wasn't an official member, but went to Hull wearing the name-daubed butcher's coat (preferred to think it was a doctor's) and, bizarrely, a painted army helmet (a real one from the Army Surplus Store. It was as heavy as all get out. Could have been a potent weapon if I was that way inclined. It didn't get another outing)

My first season (full season) was 1962 but I had been to a few games prior to that. I was lucky my parents were big fans so I would go to lots of away games and they loved the FA Cup so I never missed in my younger years. As a little kid I had the cut down white coat and a Dorman Long safety helmet with all the players names on.
I had good access too ,one of my earliest photos was of me with Raich Carter and Mick McNeil. Mick was my Dads cousin so we used to get decent access to the players at training.
