Attendances at the recent womens internationals

Not sure why 249 at riverside is highlighted when there was only 119 at Carrow Road….? Just a passing comment.

Disappointing crowds them mind. I’m sure many more were hoped for. There will be bigger at the Euros I’d expect.

They were friendlies in awkward parts of the country to get to, when the club games are still ongoing, during a period of bad weather, and women's football always attracts much smaller attendances.

It was incredibly badly organised. Why put Germany Vs Spain hours before the England game and make people buy separate tickets? People are obviously going to choose England which they did. It was also very badly promoted. I had no idea Germany Vs Spain was even at the Riverside. Didn't see it advertised anywhere

To an extent, I don't think this is just about the women's game but how the English public regard football.

We love our teams. We love our club sides, and our national team, and sometimes there's schadenfreude in seeing a rival humbled, but I'm less convinced we love football for itself. I think the appetite for going to watch football as a neutral, between 2 teams whom we have no strong feelings about just isn't as great as we think.

Euro '96 was an example of this: 19k at SJP; 21k at Anfield; 22k at Nottingham. Those stadia would have been sold out 3-4 times over had England bee playing. I know someone will poitn out it was expensive, but it was also the first top class international football tournament staged in the country for 30 years. For occasional events, our fans have no problem stumping up £50+ for tickets now, and they would have done so then if the appetite for football without the visceral tribalism was there.

So, the Lionesses will get a crowd, but I'm not surprised 2 neutral countries playing a friendly attracted so few.

I'll add that I didn't know it was on either; it could just be that!

The only time i knew that Germany/Spain was at the riverside was a post randomly appearing on my twitter feed from the German FA saying they were there. This was after the match however

The Germany Spain game was on in the afternoon in the middle of the working week! I think Boro got the worst deal of the three sets of fixtures… a lot of the crowd would have been made up with school children - again, the Riverside game was an evening kick off during the school week, the other sets of games were on over the weekend and half term.
That allied with some non-existent marketing and it’s not wonder crowds were as low as they were

Agree, With all the above.

Just wondering why specifically criticise the 289 at Riverside when 119 at Carrow is lower. Seemed odd to me.

8k isnt a bad crowd for a Thursday night, put it on a saturday afternoon and it would have probably been around 13/14k. The other game during the day on a Thursday was never going to attract many, it sounds like very bad planning from the organisers

I walked past the Riverside about 13:00 on the day of the game & wondered why the burger van was setting up..

Midweek & mid afternoon kickoff was not a good idea... Though for one venue.. it's always going to be a compromise..

They didn't. They mentioned it because it was the opening game of the tournament. There's no anti teesside agenda this time.

What utter rubbish

Btw I was at sjp
For euro 96
And for the olympics.

The key is money as tickets are far too expensive.

It's not rubbish, I was at that game too on a freebie. I had zero interest.

I have said before I have zero interest in ManU to Real Madrid, or tactics, I go to watch Middlesbrough win, nothing more.

I often went to games in Spain, sometimes Real mainly Atletico, it was something to do.
