Are you or were you in a Union?

No… never haven been… never will…. Never needed one… have always successfully fought my own battles if required to do so to my own end and no one else’s.

Mum was in unison… fully paid up member for years, didn’t cause anyone any trouble. The day that she needed them they shat on her from a great height to “protect their interest and fight the bigger fight’

6 months after she left they lost the bigger fight and the whole lot went out the door.

What was/is you job?
I ask because I'd say its likely that you have needed them without realising it.

GMB.
I was a member of unite for a long time, but quit when Red Len decided to lie about Anna Turley, Anna took them to court and won substantial damages.

Currently part of Unison - when I first started it was £8 a month. Now it is £20.

£200+ a year to get the same deal that non-Union members get.

Was in unison, only joined because i became a supervisor at work and thourght they would repressent me if a dicapline came up , when one did they said i had to find someone else represent me at the hearing because the other party was being guided by our union rep. Went on my own, said my bit and case thown out, rep was a joke and left looking very embarrassed. I left union but at least i got a free diary for the time i was in, although not free if you take ino account union subs.

So is there nothing that a Union fought for in the Marine Industry that improved you conditions at all?

That was not the question though was it.

From my personal experience (and but he looks of it a few more on here) they are a waste of space

I certainly was - everyone should be really if they work for someone. You don’t get me ! I would like to dedicate this song to Nobby, or rather his alter ego Knobby 😵‍💫

That Unite hotel in Birmingham
Original budget £35m now forecast to cost £98m which is £30m more than it's actually worth.

Shop steward for the T&G many moons. Best peice of advice I was given went something along the lines of

If Jesus was a shop steward, at the water to wine miracle a member would declare they are teetotal and wanted water all along.

Its my question now since you said that you never needed one.
I suggest that undoubtedly you've benefited personally from Union activity.

I'm not for a second suggesting they're all good. They were responsible for the single biggest traumatic event in my entire career. And IMO had a hand in the demise of British Industry in the 70s and 80s, witnessed first hand.

But to say they're a waste of time is way off the mark. IMO they've done far more good than harm.
