Apple vision pro - what do you think

I’ve seen a few vids lately from the usual influencers pushing apples latest gadget but would you buy use one.

I like the concept but not sure it really will take off.

Here it is being used on a plane.

Never see any of these people wearing glasses and for that reason have always looked unfavourably at this kind of tech

Tried VR headsets in the past, especially for Elite Dangerous game but couldn`t get round how uncomfortable they where when you have to wear glasses

Wouldn`t buy them for that reason, maybe the compatibility has changed I don`t know but I`m not keen or young enough now to find out

Obviously you could wear contact lenses, but similar to how people don’t like watching 3D movies at home etc, I just can’t imagine them being used widescale.

I think that with Apple Vision Pro you can pay to get some zeiss prescription lenses that fit inside the headset.

I'm no optician but I can't imagine for one second that using these things for several hours a day wouldn't severely damage your eyesight.

I think the whole square eyes / damaged eyesight has been debunked before but it persists. It may give you strain same as being on a computer all day can, but most of that is generally caused by low refresh rates.

Faster refresh rates cause less strain and this refreshes faster than most office monitors would. You might feel tired doing 8 hours a day in it but I'd imagine most wouldn't use it that much, you're more likely to sweat into it etc as I found using VR for long time especially in warmer weather, this looks to have a cloth front so more comfortable but wonder if that is removable / replaceable for cleaning.

I'm surprised they don't just have diopter adjustment as VR headsets I've used have had that. Looks like the lenses are 99/149 dollars so not as much as I expected? But I'd just use contacts personally

It seems they are selling them

On January 8, 2024, Apple announced that the release date of the Vision Pro in the United States would be on February 2, 2024. Estimates of initial shipments ranged from 60,000–80,000 units. Pre-orders began on January 19, 2024 at 5:00 a.m. PST and the launch shipments sold out in 18 minutes.

As for price we’ll…. Wow

There is no official UK price yet for the Apple Vision Pro, but considering how Apple tends to price its other products, it could well cost £3,499.

The Vision Pro costs $3,499 in the US. As of February 2024, $3,499 is equal to about £2,788 but Apple doesn’t usually price its products at a converted rate. iPhones and iPads often cost the same in pounds as they do in US dollars.

The price isn't really a surprise, top end VR kits can be over a grand and they require a fairly powerful pc to power them, this is a pretty new product and tech so was never going to be a budget option.

I think it'd be cool to have one but I wouldnt buy one.

True but as a mass marketing device 3,500 seems a little steep especially to take outside or use daily as they envisage etc but yes your your right VR isn’t cheap.

Apparently the Oculus Quest 3 is just as good and a hell of a lot cheaper.

I had the first Quest and enjoyed it initially but got bored of it after a while. Although I used to love a game of table tennis, was a mad experience the first time.

I thought it was interesting how it’s locked to the holders eyes through retina scan as well but it has a guest option.

Just as good is probably a stretch, the apple product is expensive AF but it is higher resolution, 4 times brighter, doesn't need an external controller, has better processor, more cameras, has retina tracking, LIDAR scanner etc etc - the resolution and brightness will make it a lot better to look through

For what most people use it for quest will be fine though so the Vision Pro is poor value, but you're paying for early tech. The hand and eye tracking on the Vision Pro is meant to be immense, but it has to be if it's not using a controller.

iPhones are already over a grand, as are iPads - MacBook Pros can stretch to £4k. Like those devices, I'd imagine if you're taking it out the house you'd be wise to insure it.

This will sell, I doubt it's going to sell millions but it'll be popular and they're already working on a v2. It'll get smaller, lighter, better battery etc over time and more applications

The video I watched of how it creates an avatar if you for FaceTime was quite impressive - room for improvement but it's better than a cartoon avatar and for a v1, pretty well done, looks better live than in a picture, but it's essentially removing the headset. I like that you can also bring up your computer screen remotely although it only works with apple computers - there are definitely some corporate use cases in mind though & they've already rolled out enterprise device management.

Is that AR or just VR?

Only rich tech bros will spunk £3k on a cumbersome device that runs out of battery in a couple of hours. Maybe five years from now a slimmer longer-lasting device will make it feasible for the main stream.
Just think of all the road traffic and other accidents that will be caused by it though.

Yes 2 hour battery life is what’s reported on its own steam.

Quest 3 does both AR (MR) and VR. It's a pretty nifty little gadget. The cinema app big screen is excellent. Can basically drop an film on the quest and watch in a cinema screen.
Some of the games are well worth a look - assassin's creed - Asgard's wrath2.
Half life alyx on PCVR is simply one of the best games of all time, and that's from a mid 40s gamer who remembers buying c64 tapes

Prices more likely to go up than down realistically

Thing is though apple stuff is overpriced, but it is nice to use. Their presence in the market will create more demand, and more competition will appear. Meta won't sit on their laurels and if the market increases there will be more development and therefore more hardware and software options

Look at the things they have done and been mocked for, but then other phones adopt them too. Not many phones have headphone jacks now! Samsung made adverts mocking apple for the headphone jack being dropped yet you only get it on entry level Samsung phones now - their S lineup don't have one. I'd be surprised if we don't get faster wireless charging soon and if so, that charger port is on borrowed time as it will take up space and be a water ingress point etc
