Anyone read Craig Johns article on greenwood this morning?

I think wages are the big issue here, not the fee. This is always mentioned in the newspaper articles about him. If Leeds go up, then he presumably has a wage rise in his contract which changes things somewhat, and would mean another loan next season (to us or elsewhere).

I suspect that he will not be back.
I think the potential benefit of a pay rise from Leeds promotion works both ways - they'll have a player they still don't want, suddenly earning more. It makes their need to move him on even greater.

I don't think wages will be a barrier, since he'll be attracting championship clubs with similar resources to us.

On the other hand I think there's little chance we'll see the £1.5m transfer fee as good value, not unless he has a Messi like end to the season.

Id rather speculate with £1.5m on a young player and develop him rather than take a player who has played a handful of good games and gone missing in far too many.

He's just turned 22. He's younger than Gilbert, Azaz and Silvera. Why can't he still be developed into a better player? - Akpom was 27 before he started scoring.

Might be a barrier to him moving permanently. Not sure how long his contract is, but he's already rumoured to be on something like £30k a week isn't he? Could go up to £40k?

Can't see many, if any, championship clubs wanting to pay him even half that. He's potentially going to have to write off over a £1m a season to join a championship club . Easier said than done, short career and he's proven nothing yet really.

Either his agent pulls a rabbit out the hat and finds a club (maybe overseas) who can get closer to his salary, Leeds sell and offer to pay some of his wages as part of the deal (unlikely) or he stays there and goes out on loan again?

I'd be surprised if we were willing to offer any more than £10k a week, maybe not even that much. Can't see it happening.

appearances yes, wiki doesn't differentiate between a 90 minute appearances, and 3 min sub appearances. He was almost exclusively a sub for leeds and when all the minutes are added up, it's about 7 matches worth. He was an untested novice when he came here. He started off well, then circumstances meant he had to play a lone striker role, which isn't really his thing.
For Leeds
Premier league, 4 starts, 21 subbed in, 4 assists, 1 goal, 641 minutes
Championship, no starts, 1 subbed in, 7 minutes
FA cup, 4 starts, 1 subbed in, 1 goal, 347 minutes
EFL cup, 1 start, 3 subbed in, 145 minutes

So a total of 9 starts before he joined us: most of them in cup games. I do think he's gone backwards in the second half of the season with us but that's not unexpected for a young player in his first full season. Normally you take them out of the team for a while so they can take a breather but we haven't really been in a state where we can do that.

He has, but I suspect part of that is because he’s been asked to play as a lone CF and partly because of the natural ups and downs of a young player

Definitely part of it. We almost broke Rogers early in the season by trying to make him play up front. Same with Greenwood. Crooks has gone on record about how he struggled to play as a striker. I suspect we'll hear the same from Silvera as well. We keep playing players who aren't strikers as strikers then wonder why they struggle.

Like Rogers initially, it's hard to know Greenwood's best position. He has a terrible record for yellow cards for an attacking player. He managed to rack up 5 yellow cards in just 9 starts for Leeds. Even for the leeds U21s he has 6 in about 18 games.

I don't know what we plan to do next season but if the aim is the playoffs at the very least, it's hard to see Greenwood being good enough to be a starter from what we've seen this season.

I agree on how much we will be willing to go to, another loan may be an option, but I guess it depends on how much he wants to achieve some stability by signing for a club permanently.

Either way he won't be at Leeds next season I'm sure.

simple answer to that conundrum is make sure we have at least 3 natural strikers in the squad, maybe 4 (with one being a 18-20 year old happy with 5 sub appearances all season)
