Anyone ran over a dog?

Because I did on the way to work this morning. I don't know what to do.

There was nothing i could have done, it was in front of my car before I even had time to react. Obviously I stopped, told the owners what had happened and even rang the emergency vets for them and gave them my details before leaving.

I reported it to the police and then got a text from the owners to say sadly their dog passed away shortly after arriving at the vets. I just feel so helpless and a bit numb, i'm sat here at work now trying to distract myself but all my brain wants to do is keep replaying it. I'm an animal lover and absolutely beating myself up about this.

I'm not really expecting any advice other than to try to forget about it but I wanted to get it off my chest, thanks.

Awful situation, sorry to hear it's happened to you.

I think you reacted far better than many others would have in that situation, doesn't sound like there was anything further you could have done in response.

I've let my family members die.
He is seriously ill, but I don't have enough money to treat him.
I had to choose to let him go. To leave money to take care of another elderly person.
I miss him and he comes to me in my dreams.
I make merit with the little money I have.
He came to me again, he smiled and seemed to forgive me.
Some things we don't want to happen. But it has already happened.
I can only grieve and wish him only good things.
Death is not our end. I always believe this.

It seems like you have done all you possibly could and i'm sure the dogs owners will appreciate this.

It will no doubt be getting replayed in your mind over and over but you have no need to beat yourself up as it sounds like you were utterly blameless.

Hope your day gets a bit better and you can put a pretty horrible ordeal behind you.

I don't think there is any blame you should attach to yourself.

Dog owners should have their dogs "under control" all the time. Sadly an increasing number seem to believe that their dog will never step into a road and will walk their dogs off the lead alongside busy main roads. When I go to work I drive up the A68 and as you go into Tow Law I frequently see the same bloke walking his German Shepherd along the side of the road off the lead. This is in the 40mph zone before you enter the town 30 limit. Dogs should be on the lead anywhere near a road. I don't trust my dog not to chase a cat, squirrel, pigeon, shadow or whatever. I hope his dog never does but it only takes one moment and if the dog is not on a lead...

Take it easy you have been involved in an accident.

Objectively it was just bad luck…a dreadful moment in time.
You did everything that a responsible person could do. Hopefully, given the distance of time,
what you’re feeling now will ease.
You’re probably still in shock.

Not a dog but a fox on the A19. 70 mph and it just ran out in front of me. Killed unfortunately.
Took me weeks to get over it. I kept thinking it might have had cubs waiting for it to come back.

What an awful situation for all involved. Its obviously a terrible accident that you could not be blamed for. You did everything possible that you had to do and I take my hat off to you as some wouldn't. I wouldn't say forget about it, just give yourself the time to deal with it...it was as much a shock for you as the owners

You are also a victim here in an unfortunate set of curcumstances.

Give yourself time to process the shock. You feel low because you have compassion, not becasue you have done anything wrong. Do what you can to distract yourself.

I haven't but came close to hitting a calf on the a19 at 70 after a match - it was dark and was just wandering across carriageway.

My Dad did hit a dog on the sdgefield road years ago - Like you - it just ran out of nowhere. It was killed instantly but my Dad was pretty shook up and did quite a bit of damage to the car

If nothing else, I think you can at least take comfort in knowing you did what you could afterwards to give it the best chance it had, and at least allowed it to have its final moments with its owners, a lot of people shamefully don't even bother doing that.

Try not to be too hard on yourself.

Back in 87 I ran over one on a driving lesson in thornaby..

The driving instructor told me just to drive off so i did, the dog ran off but looked hurt…

I was in shock but he said in that area you don’t stop to tell someone you’ve just knocked their dog down as they’d probably fill you in…😱 felt bad for days…

Only stuck with instructor because I’d paid up for all my lessons….
