Anybody Keep Koi?

In the process of landscaping my garden. The pond is built out of concrete blocks and loads of rebar. (1800 Gallons) Im going to render the inside and then coat in liquid Rubber. Im going for an Oase Perficlear Compact M filter, has anybody use this? or have an other recommendations? Also using a skimmer, and 110v UV filter, aerated bottom drain etc.

Any thing that I must do or should be looking out for? any good resources you could point me in the direction of?

I've a liner, so can't help you but I've always used Pondkeeper in Billingham. They are very knowledgable and supply good quality stock. Pop in or check out their website!

You should get it fibre glasses that's the norm for a KOI pond. The filter you are looking at seems inadequate for 1800 Gallons that's a similar size to my pond and I use an Evolution Aqua 220 but a drum filter is better if you have the cash. Use Kirky's Koi for your equipment he's cheaper than anyone local.

I have a 2200 gallon koi pond running an Oase proficlear L compact and 110w EV aqua UV with skimmer and bottom drain. The pond is massively over filtered (a good thing) to be honest but I ordered the drum before the pond was built and it ended up a lot smaller than I anticipated. I would have thought a Compact M would be plenty enough for 1800 gallons as long as it is not overstocked. You would probably get a way with a 55w UV unless it is in direct sun for most of the day.

I have no regrets with the Oase filter - it's brilliant. No maintenance except for descaling the screens once a year and occasionally clearing accumulated waste on the outlet. It is a world of difference to the old pressure pump I had on a previous pond. I had one issue with the drum sticking last year. I phoned their support number and got straight through to someone who gave me great advice and I got it fixed within an hour (it just needed cleaning and greasing).

Mine is lined. I wish I had it fibreglassed but that would have been even more expense. Also I wish I had it insulated as I might add an air source heat pump in the future. The fish don't seem to like it when the temperature bounces around 11-13c so it would just be to hold it at 14c for a month or 2 in autumn and again in spring.

Be prepared for new pond syndrome - mine took around 3 years for everything to settle down and get consistent clear water. Its very frustrating because you are constantly trying new things to get everything clear when in reality the best thing to do is just be patient.

Pond Planet in Stockton is brilliant for advice and they stock Oase. I got loads of help from them when I was building mine and bought everything from them as a result. Also koifourm.uk is a very active forum for koi lovers - you can get loads of advice and inspiration there.

I’m almost finished on 2100 gallon pond. Fiberglass topcoat to be finished this weekend. Insulated with king span and a big ass window (1m x 2m).
I’m running a spindrifter bottom drain to nexus 220, 15000 variable pump through uv and back to pond via 2 x 2inch returns.
Skimmer in wall but capped off and used in the future (probably to easypod then pumped through Baki shower).

Thanks for the reply. The proficlear compact M is rated upto 20,000L for Koi ponds, mine would be 8/9000L Should be ok right??

My father in law has a lovely pond that he built with scaffolding boards, he has quite a few goldfish which He bred himself in the pond(netted them out when they where fry and kept them in a lined barrel until they where big enough to go back in the pond) he has a few Koi one of them is pretty big and a sturgeon which is cool swimming around the bottom of the pond. I would love a pond but don't have a big enough garden, but I would probably fill mine with native type fish(Roach,Rudd common and Mirror carp and tench).

It all depends how many Koi and how big. I'll be amazed if you find that it copes to be honest. That's why people with larger ponds go multi bay, Nexus (EV Aqua) or drum.

This filter is a drum buddy. And I was going to get a nexus but they are huge, and the guy at the shop said to stay away from them.
