Anthony Vickers - Images of Middlesbrough to blame for lack of recruitment?

We’re a small provincial club without a lot of cash on the hip. Our town centre isn’t pretty or top of many people’s bucket list in which to live, but like many provincial clubs, it’s possible to live in the picturesque surrounding areas and rarely visit the town.

Either way, it’s not a vibrant footballer/footballer’s wife hub like Cheshire or London, so we are arguably behind some of the north west clubs or even West Midlands clubs (like Stoke) on that front, without the funds to compensate. We’re also a bit further away from most major cities which may play into some players’ thinking.

There comes a point though where you just have to accept who we are, what we are, and what we are doing, instead of constantly thinking the people in charge don’t have a clue or that the world owes us something better.
People get too defensive about the truth. The reality is that Middlesbrough is a hard sell and has a negative perception. As the above poster said , we need to accept that. That doesn't mean we don't try to change the views of others etc or stop trying to make things better

I dont think people are being overly defensive. I think most accept the town isn't going to be top of anyone's favourite places to live. It's missing the point to imply people are just offended by the implication.

What people are saying is that the thrust of the article - "we struggle to sign players because the area has a bad rep" is largely bollox. I mean yeah, you're going to lose out to London clubs at times because some people just want to live in or around London.

But the whole "woe is us, no-one will sign because they think they'll have to live in an industrial wasteland" just sounds like an excuse. Plenty of other non London clubs are in exactly the same boat, so why aren't they bleating about it every 5 minutes?

The gazette is pretty much just clickbait these days.

Not being funny here but how exactly did they '"set the attack dogs in Orta"? Maybe I missed that.

I'd say although the money was definitely 'spaffed' that summer that's down to the recruitment team and manager surely. Gibson can't be blamed for the quality (or lack of) of players that came in?
You did well to miss that. Clear as day.

It’s totally **** hold no merit. He’s clearly nicking his stuff from a different forum this week.

tbf if gaston's wife went to most places outside of London, Manchester or Liverpool she would have probably had similar concerns. This isn't something endemic to Teesside

Most players don't even live onb teeside as mentioned. Ugo, viduka, southgate, clayton, Whelan, windass, hendrie to name a few lived more near leeds and harrogate! Respect to juninho who really integrated into the area. If it's good enough for him theres no excuse really as he gave up Brazil for the boro.

Industrial São Paulo, as he said. People think I grew up on the beach. I didn’t.

There's lots of great things in this area for people who visit to enjoy, but a lot of those are things like walking on the NY Moors, fish and chips in Whitby. Things a 20 something london boy couldn't give two hoots about. IF I wanted to sell the area to them, I'd be pushing the fact that Yarm is a nice place with bars and restaurants to enjoy a social scene and they can get up to Newcastle on a Saturday after a game in about 45 minutes for a night out.

When you're picking out "Baker Street" and "Center Square" as "Wonderful Things" about the region then you've got to expect a bit of push back.

A street with a few okayish pubs, and a shopping center much like shopping centre's across the country - hardly things that are amazing about the region. Where's Saltburn on his list or Great Ayton - much more impressive than a bloody pedestrianized shopping center?

Can even live in Newcastle or Harrogate if they want to. 30 mins taxi from Harrogate to Leeds if they want the night life.

Exactly, it’s not like they are going to shack up on parliament road is it.

The simple fact is that the only times most of our players set foot in middlesbrough is to
Kick a ball. We train at hurworth About 10 miles from the Boro and many live in n york’s yarm etc.

We do have a bad name but it’s largely prejudiced jaundiced reporting but inside and outside the region. That’s why things like radio one big weekend we’re so huge as I lost count of reading about the radio one guys and the artists that were amazed how good the area and the people were.

the press we get is shocking and needs to be addressed.
