And while everyone was looking the other way.

This proposal would reduce the value of current state pensions slightly, but would reduce the value of state pensions for future generations significantly. These are the same people who are also being told that they won’t receive state pensions until they are nearly 70.

If they really want to be fair to all generations, they shouldn’t scrap the triple lock. They should extend national insurance to include those of pensionable age instead.

Yes I know its only a think tank atm Lizards but from little acorns etc. Just shows though you really have to keep an eye on them. Why has this news been slipped out now ??

I read this earlier and my first thought was, these people have ALREADY paid a lifetime of taxes and NI.. There was absolutely NO mention of fairer taxation from the avoiders and eveaders. The triple lock is in place because we have the lowest pensions in Europe.

Be terrible if they do this to the Blue Rinse Brexiteers, they totally trusted this Govt and so they should.

TT, as I’ve mentioned above, this proposal would affect young people (predominantly remainers) much more significantly than any “Blue Rinse Brexiteers”.

To be fair to the government (a sentence I never thought I'd find myself writing) this is a report from a think tank, nothing more at the moment.

Removing the 'triple lock' was going to be in the Conservative Party election manifesto in 2019 but was dropped as it proved unpopular with focus groups.

So now they get a think tank, no doubt registered in Tufton Street with all the other RW ones, to start the 'nudge' process again so that what is currently unpopular & extreme will become mainstream & fiscally prudent and any argument against will be shot down with 'Gordon Brown sold all the gold & there was no money left in 2010'.

Introduce NI for pensioners but also integrate into a wider NHS / social care framework.

Agreed. The sooner we have a centrally funded National Care Service the better.

The only reason social care wasn’t incorporated into the NHS at the start was that the Government didn’t want to upset the local authorities. I’m certain they’d be delighted to have that responsibility removed from them now!

The press conference today, Times journalist asked Sunak how will you pay for all the spending, will you remove the triple lock?
Answer "There will be hard times ahead".

Public now primed to start joining the dots.

I can't see how removing the triple lock can be avoided. That was going to be true just with Brexit, maybe even without Brexit, let alone with the pandemic.
