All Wilkos gone

Some were meant to be bought out by B&M but apparently all 400 Wilkinsons will now go, leaving over 12,000 people without a job. The high street is dead on it's **** isn't it?

Apparently HMV were going to buy them but the deal has fallen though.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Mr Ashley come in with a last minute take it or leave it offer.

The b&m deal is still on but they won't be wilkos, they will become b&m, hence all wilkos will go but those 50 stores will rebrand

HMV deal fell through due to rising costs

Realistically it's probably cheaper for someone to pick up the stores after they close rather than taking on staff and dealing with tupe terms etc and existing stock etc

Sad to see wilkos go but I've not been in a busy one for 5-6 years

Stockton one I used to frequent a lot when it had the upstairs section, it ended up half the size and half the range and stores like b&m and home bargains came in and had better quality goods and better prices and usually free parking

Shame for all the workers.

Also, it was a good place to shop when you wanted the odd bit of basic DIY stuff, or cheap stocking fillers for the kids at Christmas etc.

The internet has killed off a lot of variety of shops. Its only shoes shops, clothes shops and charity shops left.

I love the Yorkshire Trading shop in Whitby. Always go through it on the way to Trenchers and pick all sorts of bits and pieces I didn't know I needed.

Supermarkets are as much to blame, you can buy just about anything in them.

I've got a shed full of crap from Wilko's, Yorkshire Trading and Boyes Stores that I really, really needed and have never used. ;)

It is a sad day for the High Street but we are all to blame due to the way we now shop. I wanted some weed killer for the path and have ordered it from Amazon.

Jesus, what next? the town is depressing to walk through, everything is closed. Boyes and Wilko were always my favourite shops

The gradual progression is inevitable, 15 years ago small independent shops were going under because of shops like Wilkos and Woolworths, now massive shops like Wilkos are going under because everything is online now, and because of the cost of living crisis.

Every town centre in the country is the same, they are dying.
The internet, has many great advantages, to be able to shop online, with Amazon, ebay etc.
However it does come at a cost, people are not shopping in town centres anymore, so shops are not sustainable.
The only shopping centres that will survive are the large outlets, the likes of Trafford centre or Metro, and main Cities, but most of the town centres around the country will be gone in a few years.

Really sad news. I used the Middlesbrough store frequently and there were always queues at the check outs. With free parking (now £1) next to it and close to be the bus station the Middlesbrough Wilko waa very popular and will be much missed.
Best wishes for the future to all the staff.

My Mrs mum loves Wilko's she's always buying rubbish she doesn't need from there.

The UK economy is swirling the toilet never mind the high street, October is going to be rougher than a badgers ****.

By new year mass looting, rioting could well be on the cards if the weather holds.

I've been trying to prepare the younger users on this forum for that for months.

Most of you boomers will be fine of course.

Is Wilkos a bigger collapse than Woolies in 2008/9?

Wilkos certainly had a strong brand up till recently. The stores were well laid laid out, well it, more pleasant than going the the Range, or Poundland or B&M or Home Bargains. I guess Wilko was paying higher rents.

If I bought weedkiller online it must cost the supplier nearly £5 to get it to me. If I go into Town I can go to several shops buy 5 or 6 items that I can check in person and it costs £3 in fuel and parking say if you live 3 miles out and park for £1. Some with bus passes can do it for free. Something does not add up. I suspect business rates are acting as a tax on the high street and landlords have not reduced rents to reflects reduced demand for high street properties. OK there time saved having it deliveried, as long as the item deliveried is OK and your spare time is worth say £20/hour.

customers obviously disagree because they've all been going to those shops far more.

I blame Keir Starmer

That made me lol

Ultimately the boomers are wholly responsible.

The fourth turning is an interesting concept and read by Bill Strauss and I want to say Neil Howe.

Talks about generational cycles (80 years), and how each generation has a specific role that rhymes throughout history. We're now into the fourth turning or crisis phase, sadly the millennials will bear the brunt of this much like the silent generation did during world war II.

Wilko's was just a bigger and cheaper version of YT and stuff. If they can't make it. many of the others won't
They just stocked too much rubbish. Big stores, high rents, average prices, small pieces taking up too much space with no margin

As said, like a 2000's Woolies really
