Alicante

We stayed in the Hospes Amerigo.
Top notch room and service .
We went half board and the evening meals were something special.
Very handy for the old town with all its bars and restaurants, and the harbour.

There are a lot of hotels, mostly small, in the area around the Old Town, and the New Town, just north of the marina and harbour. It depends on what you want - some of them are very old and quaint, with fewer facilities, some are new and glitzy, with every mod con. There are loads of restaurants on the Esplanade Espana, which runs right alongside the marina. Go one or two blocks into the town from there for better value. Don't eat in any place that has pictures on the menu outside. There are lots of bars in that area, there's a good atmosphere, although I don't know what it's like in January.

A good trip on a nice day is to take the lift up the cliff into the castle, then walk down from there into the Old Town, stopping at a few bars to quench your thirst. Restaurante Carmen in Plaza del Carmen is a good bar (even though it has a picture menu outside) if you can find it, and if it is open.

Hope you enjoy it. Fingers crossed that the weather is good for you.

It is not far from the best places to go for winter sun in Spain. Murcia and Almeria provinces.

They all have some rain over the winter. So it is always a bit of pot luck.
