Alf Duffield wasn't far wrong, was he?

Browsing through my Ayresome Park scrapbook, I came across some evening gazette articles I got from the main library years ago were AD said (13/121985) that within 5 years we could be moving to a new all seater stadium

When you think the state the club were in at the time financially, what made him think he could come out with a comment like that

I wonder where he had a ground location in place, or extend Ayresome Park!

I suspect the plans in 1985 would have been for a much smaller stadium than 30000 though, unless it was going to be based on the George Reynolds plan for Darlington eg build it and they will (not) come

Probably junos, wonder if there will be anything in the archives saying where the proposed site would be

Parking and access is still an issue for me, but not as bad as when the Riverside opened. The green fields around the stadium are not there yet, neither are the power leisure boats. Some more global warming required.

I remember me and my mates meeting Alf outside the Southfield WMC.
He was sat on the little wall crying.

He had just placed the club into administration as the only way to save it. He was worried people wouldn't understand and would hate him.

"Don't worry Alf, we'll let everyone know the truth". I think we told about 3 people.

Something tells me there was a site lined up at one point, nearer to the newport bridge, maybe along toward the hartington interchange
