Critical in hospital in an induced coma after an accident on his handbike, head hit a truck then the ground. Fighting for his life apparently, just give the poor guy a break. One of my heroes, no doubt. Hope he pulls through.......... again.

Oh that’s awful after all he has overcome, loved him in f1 before his accident but after he had been a true inspiration.

keep fighting Alex

He was on the beyond the grid podcast only a few weeks ago.

Agree with Randy: if he survives this as well he is the highlander

Update: SIENA, Italy (AP) — Alex Zanardi remains in stable condition after a crash on his handbike and for now will stay in a medically induced coma, doctors said Monday in a fresh medical update.
The Santa Maria alle Scotte hospital in Siena said the Italian auto racing champion-turned-Paralympic gold medalist spent a third night in intensive care without change and that his neurological condition remained grave.
“The neurological evaluations will be carried out only when we reduce the sedation, which we are not thinking of doing at the moment," Dr. Roberto Gusinu said. "We need to have patience, a lot of patience.”
Zanardi, who lost both of his legs in an auto racing crash nearly 20 years ago, has been in a medically induced coma and on a ventilator since he crashed his handbike into a truck near the Tuscan town of Pienza on Friday during a relay race.
Doctors said he suffered serious facial and cranial trauma and have warned of possible brain damage.
The 53-year-old Zanardi won two championships in CART in the United States and had two stints in Formula One. He crashed during a CART event in Germany in 2001 when both of his legs were severed in a horrific accident the weekend after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
During his recovery, Zanardi designed his own prosthetics and learned to walk again. He then turned his attention to hand cycling and developed into one of the most accomplished athletes in the world. He won four gold medals and two silvers at the 2012 and 2016 Paralympics, competed in the New York City Marathon and set an Ironman record in his class.

Just got round to listening to his beyond the grid interview which was two days before the accident. He sounds a really decent chap. Doesn’t pull any punches either, has upset Briatore many times!

Update:
“Zanardi was moved back into intensive care Friday after falling into unstable condition, three days after being transferred to a neurological rehabilitation center.
Zanardi was moved Tuesday from a hospital in Siena to the Villa Beretta rehab center in Costa Masnaga, a month after getting seriously injured in a handbike crash.
But the hospital which runs the center said Zanardi has been transferred to the intensive care unit at the San Raffaelle hospital in Milan after his condition became unstable. His son, Niccolo, expressed concern about the ability to communicate with Alex Zanardi and the length of the rehabilitationprior to him falling into unstable condition again.
Zanardi, 53, underwent three delicate surgeries at the Siena hospital to stabilize him and reconstruct his severely damaged face after crashing into an oncoming truck near the Tuscan town of Pienza on June 19 during a relay event. He had been on a ventilator in a medically induced coma since the crash.”

Another update, still in hospital, can now ‘talk’ and is able to communicate with his familly. Can give a thumbs up and is (usually) responsive. Long way to go, but making progress.

Legend. Hope he's out of hospital soon. I was going to say taking it easy, but he's clearly not that sort of bloke!

That’s Great news I feared the worst when I saw this post re emerge.
Sorry Zorro, I did say I would give updates. I do get to hear stuff on the grapevine, but am very careful only to post stuff that I can check is already in the public domain. When I hear anything I keep looking until I see it published.

He's not at all is he! I imagine, if his thumb is working, he'll become a world class gamer.
Hopefully he can recover, he's such a fighter. Not many people have been a world class sportsman, then had their life, career, and body shattered and THEN become an Olympic champion!
Hope he pulls through.

It has to be stressed there’s a long way to go.
