Puts into perspective what the cost to the economy is going to be for us to come out of this with our jobs and services still there. Multiply this many times over for much of the private sector.

I can understand why some airlines will need some kind of bail out, at some point, but what about the billions of pounds IAG have been making for the last few years...did they not fix the roof whilst the sun was shining?

The key areas affected are the travel and hospitality industries. Airlines, hotels, restaurants, car hire etc. Without help they will be demolished and could never return. Aviation is so expensive (not least because of insane taxes) and competitive, and margins so tight, that airlines pay current costs from the cash flow generated from future ticket sales. Once those sales stop, the airline goes under.

That's what happened after 9/11. Many smaller airlines without government assistance went bust.

Most airlines already have plans to lay off much of their workforce. Delta in the US has already cut 40% of flights and staff layoffs will follow.

In principle, I have no objection to a bail out if needed as it will save jobs and stop them going bust but I very much think it should be loans that are paid back when airlines like BA are back in profit with any creative accounting to avoid repayment should be dealt with in the strongest way possible.

I support the saving of jobs of course, but it sticks in my throat a bit that some families can't feed themselves and we have record numbers of homeless people, yet the money cant be found for such issues.

maybe, a silver lining in that we reduce the the amount of travel going forward to reduce global warming, a kind of re-set. It feels a bit like humanity is ****ed big time ...

Treat him and other profiteers the way the DWP treat applicants for assistance of any kind.
Make him detail his assets and bank account balances, he can use some of them up to help keep his airline afloat until therte is real need to invest by the state. Also ensure any aid supplied is repayable on government terms.

you on about income related benefit? Because if you have paid enough NI you get benefit for 12 months no matter what your assets are

Richard Branson will no doubt be mightily relieved. Not queuing for a food bank. Provided he can get a referral from the likes of Coops that is.

We're saved.

Virgin asking their staff to take 8 weeks unpaid leave!!!! The government should refuse him a penny and strip him of
his honours and then end his licences to operate.

It would be cheaper to pay the mortgages for single home owners for the length of their temporary unemployment, and cause less upset to far more people..
