Air fryer

Yeah lao gan ma isn't hot mind, it's the smokiness I like I think.

Will give that a whirl, just ordered it!
I didnt use it for ages because I tried a spoonful of it when it arrived expecting it to be like that stuff I linked and got a shock haha. I was gutted as I had bought the 6 pack! But tried it again stirred into things it adds a lot of flavour.

I do same with this stuff but can only get away with a bit as its pretty hot. shame as my gf would like the flavour but the heat is too much for her (its not nuclear or anything, but she thinks black pepper is hot)

Yeah I find breaded stuff comes out really well. My gf likes McDonalds chicken nuggets and the ones from Tesco are pretty crap in the oven but with a few sprays of oil come out pretty much indistinguishable. I bet the costco breaded nuggets are great in it.

Did a fry up at the weekend with black pudding and sausages in the air fryer and eggs & bacon on the flat plate on the ninja, was great. Next day we had a bacon sandwich and I just used the air fryer for the bacon and it was pretty much the same although I imagine air fryer healthier than flat plate as not sat in any oil? bacon in image below is in the air fryer as was using the keep warm function while I did the eggs. Its nice to have the flat grill plate for some things though, and to be able to use it with the lid open.

Bacon is great in the air fryer, really gets the fat out too, so much so I often have to dry it. Sausages look good on your pic, not tried those yet, but knew they would be good!

Back from the match last night, slack handful of frozen chips and a couple of frozen veggie sausages in the ninja foodie, tin of beans in the oven, food on a plate 10 minutes flat - boom!

Good thinking, plus I hate using the microwave. Also contemplating how to fry eggs in there.
Can you get a flat plate grill for it? on the pro max it has this:

but ideally anything that would hold an egg could go in the basket if using it in air fry mode, like an oven proof ramekin or any kind of oven proof metal plate to give you a flat surface.

Adjusted the wings recipe for some drumsticks tonight, Louisiana hot sauce added after the above and a ranch dip. Mega
Looks pretty tasty to be fair.

Are these things convenient for freshly prepared low carb meals? I mainly eat stir-fry, omelette, steamed vegetables, etc. Meals are based around meat a few times a week and I have baked salmon and haddock other days as well as tofu. Also eat a lot off mushrooms and eggs in general. Never really eat takeaways or processed foods and don't eat chips. We sometimes make our own fish cakes which requires a fair bit of oil, so I guess it would be useful for that. But we do tend to do them in bulk in a large pan.

I’ve never done eggs but anything you can fry, bake or grill can be done in a good air fryer. Some things just take a little experimenting to find the right height, time, temperature and oil or other marinade.

I like the ninja foodi as it also has other functions like pressure cooking and searing, which should cover your steamed fish and vegetables as well as your stir fry meals. It also means you can make whole meals from scratch in the same pot.

Tried a few of these different tools but what's produced isn't the same as you'd get from traditional methods.

They don't taste bad but they're not the same, nowhere near.

Best thread today. Nothing else going on in the world, so fair play. Great chips!

What have you tried and what were they not the same as vs a traditional method?

Everything I've tried so far has been vastly superior to oven. It's not superior to deep frying but the idea is to not deep fry whilst retaining most of the flavour / texture

Anything you can cook in the oven will cook quicker in an air fryer and have better texture due to the air circulation.

The new ninja foodi 15-in-1 can do the following:

1. Pressure 2. Steam Meals 3. Steam Air Fry 4. Steam Roast 5. Steam Bake 6. Steam Bread 7. Air Fry 8. Grill 9. Bake 10. Dehydrate 11. Prove 12. Sear/Saute 13. Steam 14. Slow Cook 15. Yogurt Keep Warm

Pretty much covers most angles. You ca no get accessories to provide extra tiers inside the machine or compartmented to do two things at once. I didn't go down this angle because we already have a steamer and slow cooker and I wanted the bbq style grill on the one I got, but many air fryers are multi cookers and can be used in different ways. If you want to fry, grill, steam, pressure cook etc fish or meats or veg, it can be done easily and there are massive groups on Facebook, tiktok, Pinterest, Reddit etc churning out high quality recipes

I did a 1.8kg chicken the other day and it was done in 50 minutes and crisped up nicely. Gammon joint done really quickly too and the honey & mustard glaze browned superbly.

Since we got it the only thing our oven has been used for is warming plates and baking bread (which can be done in an air fryer but my bread is big)

Still not impressed, it will be in the garage soon.

A few years back the in-laws came to see us in Kazakhstan. My MIL brought this massive air fryer with her saying it was amazing, even though my wife had already told her not to bring it as we didn’t need anymore ‘stuff’ to have to think about as we were planning to leave, but she brought it anyway.

We humoured her but it was naff, my wife’s a talented cook so it’s not like she couldn’t use it, it just couldn’t produce anything anywhere near as tasty as other methods. And it was massive. No way were we dragging it to our next place, I can’t remember exactly what happened to it, it might have been sold to another expat, but I think it ended up in a big jumble I gave to a charity ran by the local communist party, hopefully some needy Kazakh is making gourmet beshbarmak with it!

In summary, air fryers are sh*te.

My thoughts exactly.

I get that they can cook things healthier or more economically but I already have devices which make food taste better.

Fad gadget which will soon be in my garage.

They clearly aren't a fad gadgets if they were they would have disappeared already.

They've been around for 12 years and gaining in popularity constantly, approximately 30-40% of homes have then from what I've read. Many people that get them pretty much stop using main ovens for majority of things.

Unless you are deep frying everything other methods aren't better, and if you are deep frying all your meals it's obviously not meant for you. It tastes close to deep frying, without actually deep frying. If it doesn't, you're doing it wrong, and that's ok, but it doesn't make them ***** 😂

It is scientifically better than an oven or a grill because it's circulating the air around a smaller space so things will cook faster (usually at least 20% faster) and better than any standard oven, and you have the option of combining cooking types for example pressure cooking and then air frying, which you can't do in a conventional oven.

Let's see some pictures of the things you're cooking by other methods so we can see what we are missing out in by using the air fryer? Sounds like we've got some pro chefs here if these aren't good enough 😂

I once knew a man who had a deliberately limited existence in a degree of what I would term squalor.

He cooked things in a metal tin on a concrete floor and became quite adept at it, in his own way.

He was fiercely defensive of his chosen culinary practices when questioned, in his zeal finding all sorts of arguments to justify his alternative approach.

Ultimately he was left to it.

I was just happy that I had an oven and other established devices that made food the way I like it.

His methods were certainly not for me but each to their own really.
