A word for the referee today .....

I though boro could of been awarded a penalty a few times. But overall alot better than the dross we've had for many months in the league

Thought the ref reffed with 2 different sets of rules.
Villa took every free kick from wherever they wanted whereas we were told to move to exact position of foul/incident every time without fail
Cash dragged Boro player back (obviousl booking) 30 seconds before his actual booking .
Ok he may not have committed 2nd foul if he had already been booked but we will never no really
As someone said earlier in thread warned Glover re time wasting end of 1st half. Never said a word to Martinez at end of game despite his usual time wasting tactics

Top refereeing.

The penalty claim? I've seen them given I've seen yellow cards for diving too. I wish I could say with certainty what VAR would decide. In a case like that I would like to think they wouldn't overrule but I strongly suspect they would...

Konsa said in his post-match interview that they defended differently due to the lack of VAR. That is pretty telling because it shows that VAR is considered part of the game and is a big part of tactical thinking. Not having a get-out-of-jail card means you have to defend properly and rely on the officials, be they right or wrong. Apart from the Jones challenge, I don't think there was any dwelling on incidents and it made for a better flow of the game. The ref didn't get everything right, but he didn't make any glaring errors or should I say he wasn't undermined by a team of officials endlessly replaying incidents looking for any infraction.
I'm sure it was Ally Mccoist today (or may have been another commentator over the last day or so) who said they were enjoying watching a match with no VAR....Refs allowed to make the decision and the game goes on, no stopping and starting, reviewing etc

I definitely think we got lucky with the penalty call clearly hangs his leg out and catches him, but I think there was a close one with Rogers where there player went through his leg to get the ball.

Jones actually got the ball on the replay for his booking even though it looked like he made not attempt to play it on first glance.

Although I do think the ref "managed it well"

I thought he was superb - in control, let the game flow, allowed robust but fair challenges, didn't fall for Villa's Premier League entitlement antics, didn't fall for the play acting from both sides, yellow cards for gobbing off etc etc

Excellent
So he was biased then? 😂

It was 100% a penalty, no question about it. I was surprised it wasn’t given even before seeing the replay.

Did you see in the second half when he tried to bring the free kick back to where the foul happened in front of the north stand and villa just ignored him and after three attempts he just waved play on.
