A football related thread ..... but it is West Ham (urgh)

Alternatively then, if Carrick was to leave in the summer (for whatever reason), Moyes also leaves West Ham, would you be happy with him taking over at Boro?

I would, Sunderland was a festering, poisoned chalice.

But I know for a fact that a sizeable chunk of the fans would be against him from the start, so it would be a hiding to nothing.

I think the majority of managers have that issue and because of the internet, those against can make their feelings known more vocally.

....and I think thats why I started this thread.

We're talking about a manager who has won a european trophy, and now on course to qualify again via the league potentially (7th place up for grabs)

Yet there is a stigma attached to him!

I agree with the OP assessment of the job Moyes is doing at West Ham. Unfortunately they have some of the most fickle fans in the world and he is always one bad result from being hated, regardless of what he achieves, very much in the same mould of Southgate and England.

As a manager he probably thinks he can ride this latest storm and turn things around. The owners would be silly to get rid given where they are currently which is for me better than they are.

I wouldn't blame him for walking but i don't see it. I don't think he gets another big gig in the Premier League where he can achieve the same as he has at West Ham.

Moyes has always been a good manager who stumbled across 3 consecutive crap positions where he always going to fail. I think Moyes is professional enough to filter out the white noise from the fans and get on with his job at West Ham to be honest.

You've got to have thick skin to be a good manager as ultimately they all receive criticism at some point in their career. Whether it's results, transfers, style of football, interview style etc, there'll alway be something that some fans don't like.

To spin it back around onto Boro a bit, Carrick is really experiencing his first test of this and it is a big test of his resolve. At the moment he's still got the backing of the fans, what was the poll on here, 80% stay, 20% sack? But there's still a lot of that 80% who starting to feel a bit disgruntled and becoming more critical of Carrick and some of his selections, the way he answers questions, the way we pass out from the back etc. If Carrick is going to go on to become a top manager, he needs to come through this and turn it round.

I remember when Chris Hughton got Newcastle promoted, me and a Geordie mate of mine both agreed that he had done really well, but he would be better off quitting than trying to continue in the Prem with Mike Ashley not investing. We knew Newcastle would struggle and they sold that tall spud Carroll to Liverpool and didnt properly reinvest. His stock was on the rise after that Championship season, but Newcastle struggled back in the Prem and he was sacked before Xmas.

West Ham are one of those teams that will have the occasional great season, but most of the time struggle or drift around in the lower half. All it would take is a bad start to the next season for Moyes' stock to fall too. He's doing an amazing job and i dont think Hammers fans give him anywhere near enough credit. I'd naff off at the end of the season and go get plastic surgery to flatten out that OS map face of his, if I was him.

I thought it was a bit odd that he announced he had a contract on the table ready to sign.
What was the point of saying that?

2 fingers up to the fans 😂

Probably exactly that, flip the fans the bird and send the message that the club wants him, so screw you!

I agree with the comments already made above. Decent manager who has done a great job, but suffers due to his perceived 'dour' personality and supposed unattractive style of football.

West Ham fans seem particularly deluded (probably an 11 out of 10 on the Mackem Scale of Delusions of Grandeur). Read some comments on a BBC thread a while back debating Moyes' abilities and a number of their fans suggested winning the European Competition was the very least they should have achieved last year as their squad was the best in the whole competition, so really his performance was average. Bizarre bunch, seems like a lot in the media love West Ham as well which is as good a reason to dislike them as any.
