52 Years of Joy

52 years ago today I attended my first Boro game at Ayresome Park with my dad (Boro 3 QPR 2).

If only the 7 year old me had known what he was letting himself in for........
I blame Esther Rantzen. If she had started childline 13 years earlier, I wouldn’t have needed to have been on so many years of medication

To be fair, what else is there to do on a glorious Summer Saturday than watch a 1-1 draw with Huddersfield?

1963 for me, thumped Newcastle 3-0 Arthur Kaye and Ian Gibson with the goals.
Smitten,
Ground felt packed, scrambled under the Holgate turnstiles.
Scrounged a bovril at half time, best I have ever tasted.
I often wonder if it had gone the other way would I still have been consigned to a life of, mainly, disappointments.

One thing I remember about those early matches is driving my dad mad by yelling "Offside!" every time the ball went out for a throw. I do still think it was perfectly rational for a 7 year old to assume that's what offside meant, on the basis that when the ball goes out for a throw in it has gone off the side of the pitch.

😂
Your dad shouldn't have been getting driven mad, he needed to accept responsibility.
After all, it was he who failed in his duty to accurately explain the intricacies of the offside law to a 7 year old before allowing him to attend his first match.

Talking about dads, I was 30 before I learnt my dad was a Boro fan. I always thought he hated them and only went for my benefit.
