5000 Days of Consecutive Running

Right now the incredible Paul Smith - self-styled Lord Smythe is running around a field for 50 minutes to mark 5000 consecutive days of running. Imagine that for 5000 days in a row come wind, rain or shine Paul has pulled on his running shoes and gone running.
As someone that enjoys long running challenges I take my hat off to Paul whose running streak has involved many considerable achievements for local charities and good causes. Running round and round the centre circle and then changing direction after 45 minutes and continuing on through the day is one amazing charity run for Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.
Paul likes to wear the odd costume as well and I do mean odd, again a man after my own heart. But one winter in a trail run by the Tees at Preston Park he started out as a Roman cavalry officer but then shed layer after layer during the race to end up in a posing pouch. In December!
A top guy, he will be just about finishing now. I once asked him why? He said I just started one day ... and kept going.

"Nothing crazy like in the past just a simple running soiree.
Laps around Durham Cathedral's Palace Green for 50:00 (mins and secs) to commemorate & celebrate my 5000th consecutive running day
Theme in keeping with wear a mask.... come along and wear a mask, Theatrical, Masquerade, Halloween etc etc."

That’s impressive but the guy will need new knees sooner rather than later.

I got a bit cardio obsessed a few years ago until I got a hip bursitis.

Maximo Park fella?
Nope. That maybe why he styles himself as Smythe - they did meet up once and the runner asked me to take their photo together. It was at an event for Finlay Cooper Trust as Paul Smythe Smith and Paul Maximo Park Smith had both played a part in fundraising for the Cooper charity over the years.

I will get hold of him and find out some highlights from him etc.
But just to paint a picture of what he is up against at times. I once saw him wincing during an organised trail run at Guisborough. I thought maybe it was all the ups and downs on forestry tracks. No, he had been in hospital for a procedure on his stomach the day before. And yes he had actually pulled on his runners and lapped around outside his house on the afternoon of his hospital treatment.

Crazy guy. I remember doing 30 5k’s on the trot 4 years ago. Felt that was a feat in itself
