39 years

Steve Gibson has been at the helm of the club for 39 years. During this time Boro have been in the top flight for 16 years.
Given the amount of money he has invested, as a Business man he must be disappointed with the return

In the interests of historical accuracy it’s 32 years this summer. During which time we’ve been in the top flight for 14 years.

Although the somewhat airbrushed official histories of the club do encourage such miscalculation.

In the previous 32 years we had 9 years in the top flight, in fact since we were relegated in the 53/54 season (alongside Liverpool) it was 9 in 39.

If you look at 1954 to 2025 in total that’s 71 seasons with only 23 in the top flight.

1974/75 to 1981/82
1988/89
1993/94
1995/96 to 1996/97
1998/99 to 2008/2009
2016/17

Of those seasons 3 were a single jaunt resulting in relegation back to the second division.

I think a lot of people suffer from the delusion we should be a top flight club when history tells us otherwise.

And under Gibson’s tenure we’ve clearly over performed compared to the period beforehand.

It was obvious from the 2016/17 season that Gibson was not interested in staying in the PL. If we ever do fluke going up we will be straight back down again. He blew it in 1996/97.
