32 years ago today Peter Davenport had a big decision to make

He has a choice between Boro or Villa

Both teams have tabelled a £750k offer, accepted by Man United, in Boro's case a record transfer

A bit more spice to the build up to tomorrow's home game v Millwall

Boro have started off life in the top flight quite well, playing exciting football

Davenport was a huge disappointment, I remember his first game, can't remember much more about him to be honest.

Davenport was only here 5 minutes and was promptly out for a month with a hamstring.
Brucie made a big mistake with him.
Cost 700k and was a flop with us.

Hd was bought to replace Bernie but couldn’t.

I recall Ron Atkinson actually saying that he sold us Davenport from Man U as revenge for us flogging him David Mills when he was gaffer at WBA years earlier.

I can't for one minute think Bruce wanted to replace Bernie, he was still at the top of his game & proved it that season finishing tops with Alan Smith & Aldridge

Have you not heard Bernie banging on about all the arguments him and Bruce Rioch had ?.

Rioch wanted Bernie to play out wide left.
Bernie wanted to play up front.
He brought Davenport in to work the centre.
It was a failure,Davenport couldnt finish for us.
Bernie went back up front and Davenport eventually left to go on a downward spiral.
I remember tiffs on the pitch with Bernie and Davenport over missed chances.
Not like Bernie to fall out with anybody was it?.

Bernies attitude, temprement meant he was always having runins with his manager, managers knew that because come match day they knew they would get for the team, maybe his attitude made him what he was

That sounds like bull****. Either you made it up or Ron was spinning a yarn.

I've never heard, or seen that either, if a player doesn't fit well with a particular club, ie Davenport, you don't blame the selling club, ie Man Utd, whoever you buy it's always a gamble that everything fits well

hey, it was a story that I saw in print.
If you check out Atkinson’s biography I think its mentioned there too.
Wtf am I doing even replying to you for anyway.

why would I lie ? I have nothing to gain by it.

I can't see how you can blame the selling club, WBA will have done their homework on David Mills, I know for a fact they won't have heard of him on the Friday & bought him on the Monday, hense the fact they were happy to break the transfer record to get their man

I was genuinely excited by his signing. He was a massive name for Boro to bring in. We simply didn't spend money like that.

The only thing I can remember was the winner against UTD.

We would love to have 750k to spend on a forward today😉

Look it was a story that did the rounds At the time 30 odd years ago.
I imagine the comment was made tongue in cheek originally by Ron Atkinson at a Sports night with a few drinks down him.
Never the less it made print, I do recall that.
Millsy was as much of a flop at WBA generally as Davenport was at Boro.
And people probably laughed about it.
Its as simple as that.
There os no need to get MI5 or Federal agents involved ffs

I’m sorry, I haven’t got the archives to hand like some.
My comments are made in good faith.
But if my Fading memory fails on dates, exact events you will have to bear with me.

I'm not having a go at you, just that if Ron Atkinson said that then the failure is solely down him & his club, certainly not the Boro, we didn't even want to sell him but he wanted him that much that the offer was to good to turn down

AGAIN.....I suspect it was all said tongue in cheek !.
Why are you trying to look too deeply into what was probably a throwaway jokey remark?.
I don’t think we need to know what Bert Millichip and his WBA board were thinking at the time.
Millsy was briefly the countries record signing, he didn’t hit it off, much like Davenport.
Big Ron makes a joke..... END OF !.

Over and out !
