Who is Nottingham Forest's latest summer signing Djed Spence?

The loanee from Middlesborough officially became the Red's fourth signing of transfer deadline day 18 hours after the window had actually closed

Nottingham Forest have finally completed their summer transfer business after announcing the season-long loan signing of Middlesbrough's Djed Spence.

The signing had been in some doubt as it was finalised so close to Tuesday night's deadline, but the EFL have now given it the green light and the 21-year-old will be swapping one shade of red for another this season.

He becomes the second right-sided player to sign for the club on the final day of the window after the arrival of Mohamed Drager from Olympiacos, and the fourth signing overall alongside midfielder Braian Ojeda and former West Ham United striker Xande Silva.

But who is Spence, and what can the youngest of the four deadline day signings bring to Chris Hughton's side?

It's fair to say the loanee will be the arrival most readily equipped for Championship football, having already featured in three matches for parent club Middlesbrough this season.

Interestingly, all three of those league appearances came in a more advanced role on the right side of midfield rather than as a right-back.

This versatility is not a one-off either as, in just over 100 appearances to date in his fledgling career, Spence has spent more time as a right midfielder or right winger (55) than as a right-back.

And while not yet doing so at senior level, he could also provide an option across the backline at left-back and centre-back, which he has done on occasion during his youth career at both Boro and Fulham.

It was for the Cottagers that the London-born Spence began his footballing career, featuring for their under-18s and under-23s over the years, but the closest he came to a senior appearance was for the latter in an EFL Trophy match against Charlton Athletic in 2017.

At the end of the 2017/18 season, he left the capital and headed north to Teeside on a free transfer, having already turned out for their academy side at the backend of the previous campaign as a trialist.

His first term in the North East saw him finally make his senior debut as a second-half substitute in an EFL Cup tie against Notts County at the Riverside, but after another outing, in the second round against Rochdale, he was consigned to under-23s football once more as well as sporadic appearances on the bench towards the end of the league season.

That taste of being in the matchday squad was eventually a sign of things to come, though, as, after not featuring in a matchday squad until December, he was thrust into the starting XI by Jonathan Woodgate for his league debut against Charlton, playing the full 90 minutes in a 1-0 win.

He started all but one match for the remainder of that month and capped his rapid rise off with a first professional goal, which proved to be the winner against Huddersfield Town on Boxing Day.

Spence made 24 appearances for Middlesborough that season, including in both fixtures against Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup third round, remaining a regular on the right-hand side even after the appointment of Neil Warnock.

His position in the side continued last season in Warnock's first full-term when the youngster registered a career-high 40 appearances in all competitions and doubled his career goal tally with a 95th-minute strike in the 2-0 win against Coventry City.

And after starting the first four games of the season, it looked as if Spence would remain a regular, but the presence of Anfernee Dijksteel and the signing of Warnock favourite Lee Peltier, coupled with a switch to three-at-the-back for last weekend's draw against Blackburn Rovers has seen Spence head out on loan in search of first team football.

Nottingham Forest fans have been cheered by the arrival of right-back Djed Spence from Middlesbrough.

The 21-year-old has joined the Reds on a season-long after the move was given the green light by the EFL this afternoon.

There had been uncertainty over whether the deal had been completed ahead of Tuesday’s 11pm deadline while Leicester City and Southampton reportedly enquired about the player on deadline.

Spence has become Forest’s ninth signing of the summer transfer window with four players leaving the City Ground.

Here’s a taste of what Reds fans have been saying about the move on social media…

Gareth Owen William Pickford: The lad sure can run at players and cause havoc. We need a player like this who isn’t afraid to go for it! Reminds me a little of Lolly’s style.

David Coleman: This lad has tremendous potential. Southampton tried to gatecrash Forest to his signature.

Cesari: Great signing, a coup even. Best of the known bunch.

Richard Dyson: Decent youth he is.

Aaron K Dallison: This is a better signing!! ch will have chose this one.

Shaun Wheatcroft: Great signing!!

Andy McIntyre: Happy with that signing to be fair.

Jack Roberts: Am hoping he’s a good loan but if Middlesbrough thinks if he’s any good why won’t they play him and send him on loan.

Michael Odwyer: Great signing, things are looking up, reds to the core, COYR.
