16 days to go....

I must admit, I'm becoming increasingly frustrated as each day passes by and still no activity on the transfer front.

I know some will call for patience but we need 6 new players bringing in at least in my opinion. We really needed to get our business does early doors this summer when you take into account the overhaul of players which is required.

I wish I could have more faith in our recruitment team but we've been here before; linked with every name under the sun and we're then forced to bring in players the manager doesn't really want, after failing to land our targets. I really hope that doesn't end up being the case again this summer, as we now genuinely have a manager who could do really well for us.

That results in us starting season badly tear after year and don't unually start performing until November

You first have to identify a player that is going to be an improvement on what we have in that position and might be available.
See if said player will fit into the style and ethos of the team.
Approach that player and see if he is willing to come to the club.
If he does then you need to arrange a fee with his present club.
You then need to agree a wage and terms and conditions.

If we work on the swiss cheese theory in reverse then only one hole doesn't have to align for the transfer not to happen.

Impossible to argue with and exactly as I posted yesterday.
We do need 8 signings to make a first team squad before any further departures.

I'd assume Smith will be one - if not then he's been treated very poorly.
I'd assume Steffen is another.
But we would still need 3 strikers, and a LCB for first team, plus cover/competition for Howson and Crooks.
We are very light.

Yes but don't we supposedly now have a top drawer Head of Football who has been in place for a year?
It is what he is supposed to be doing.
 
We are definitely light up front and in midfield but I think the starting 11 is probably better than we ended with last year. We can get through a few games with that 11 if we need to.
 
We definitely need one good forward in to start the season. Alongside Watmore and Coburn this will be okay as a start.
Moving on from this we need another 2 forwards, CM and LB/LCB cover if Bola is out for a bit.
Assume we are signing Steffen and Smith so GK and RB covered.
Waiting for PL teams to finalise their squads then the bargain basement feeding frenzy (loans) begins.
Nothing we can do, most of the Championship is in the same boat. Rather get the right players in late August rather than panic buys now.

If the season started tomorrow we could scrape by with 3 signings - 2 strikers and keeper - and be effective

That's not saying we don't need more players, we need a LCB, but I feel the squad/cover players will invariably added later in the window when prem squads have been finalised and unwanted players/youth players are allowed to leave on loan.

I'd argue it's actually 15 - Boyd-Munce is nowhere near the first team squad at present is he?

Played one cup game last season and hasn't been involved in any pre-season matches so far.

Which would mean minimum 8 faces through the door - 1 x GK, 2 x CD, 1 X RWB, 2 X CM, 2 X CF
 
Defensively we are strong, a leader at CB and a proper LWB
Midfield the same, yes we've lost Payero, but he hadn't done anything of note

Up front we're obviously weaker but then most people felt all our strikers were rubbish anyway, we just have less rubbish to choose from. To be fair Coburn could have come on from last season with him strengthening in the summer.

Get 1 good striker in and I think our first XI is better than last year.

Agreed, plus Daniels isn’t wanted and Coburn is still raw and learning his way. Regardless of how particular tinted lenses may see it, this close to kick off is not what Wilder will of expected - or promised. Our squad was short last season and it’s been further reduced. We have two weeks to sign a lot of players, bed them in and get them ready for Wilderball. Not going to happen. Plus we may wait till deadline day again, so effectively we’re not taking the first 6/8 games seriously.
 
We'd actually struggle to put out a squad (first 11 & bench) of senior pros at the moment?

How many subs allowed this season? 7 again?

Yep, 3-4 of the subs won't be anywhere near the first team this season. Target 4 signings by first game with the other four to follow during the rest of the window maybe?

You'd hope so. That squad doesn't look too bad on paper but all it will take will be for two midfielders or one striker to pick up knocks before the opening game and we'll be in big trouble.

The difference is though, most other teams won't be needing to sign the same amount of players that we do.

We've known this was going to be the case for some time now so I was really hoping we'd have 5/6 new players through the door at this stage at least.
