Premier league proposes reducing number of clubs 20 to 18 and scrapping the league cup

The working document – written by Liverpool’s American ownership Fenway Sports Group with reported support from United – is expected to be backed by the other members of the Big Six, Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham.

The remarkable proposals include reducing the Premier League to 18 teams, the abolishment of the League Cup and Community Shield, a play-off tournament involving both Championship and Premier League clubs, increased EFL funding and – here’s the kicker – a controlling stake in decision-making for the nine clubs who have been in the Premier League the longest.

Inevitable- too much power in a small number of clubs Inevitable also they would want to feather their own nests. It is especially insensitive this announcement with the EFL in a deep crisis already.

But then again no surprise. The whole sport is sold to the devil.

As a counter offer, why not propose voluntarily limiting the number of teams we enter in the Champion's League?
Only 6 clubs have a realistic chance of getting them, so a two thirds majority is possible.
Furthermore, it would reduce demands on the squad for the clubs who are most keen to reduce the number of fixtures.

Cracking idea (y)
I'll vote for that

It stinks - from a business point of view it's the perfect time to do it, but deffo shady - they know the EFL need the money due to coronavirus, so that nice £250m upfront payment plus £100m to the FA is just pure opportunism

"It is also planned that, as well as the 'big six', ever-present league member Everton, West Ham United and Southampton - ninth and 11th respectively in the list of clubs who have featured in the most Premier League seasons - would be granted special status."

"There is no mention of Aston Villa and Newcastle United, both of whom have featured in more Premier League campaigns than Manchester City."

Surprise Surprise... dear West Ham get special status

It's a Trojan Horse proposal. The EFL gets money to surive Covid and in exchange the top six clubs gain almost absolute power to do what they like. The EFL is in no position to argue - many clubs are close to extinction. The carrot is the loss of parachute payments to be replaced with a general payout to the EFL - which means the majority of EFL clubs would see an increase in income.

And in a few years relegation etc would be gone and they'd probably reduce the league size even more.

Personally I think the top six should b***r off to a European Super League, and reformat the EFL promoting six clubs into Division 2. Too many games in the PL are more or less a foregone conclusion anyway.

As said above. Why don't the so called big clubs just fcuk off to this so called super league. I'm sick of them and especially West ham.
