Happy Steau Bucharest day all

Was explaining it to my son at the Leeds game when Maccarone went on the pitch. Incredible times. I remember being two nil down, and a bloke near me said “I’m going to the toilet - watch is score now”.

Maccarone scored to make it 1 - 2 and everyone told him to stay away when he returned!

I remember the Steaua free kick on the edge of the box after we had gone 4 - 2 up. Never been so nervous at a game as that.

How is it 18 years ago already? 😭 to repeat the Basel feat again was unbelievable, don't think I've ever celebrated as mental as that game. You don't get nights like that very often, we had 2 in a month.

I definitely got spoilt as a Boro fan, started proper supporting us the playoffs season under Colin Todd in the early 90's, those first 15 years or so were the stuff of dreams, promotions, numerous cup runs and finals, league cup win, UEFA cup final, signing top international stars etc. A very lucky time to be a Boro fan, will never forget.

I remember the town after the game, people jumping on tables chanting pig bag.

Walkabout and the Empire were wild.

The full Boro game were out in the town.

You know what if you supporrtef a Man City or Chelsea as a plastic, you might get some joy seeing a trophy win. But when you have to wait so long for so much joy to see your local team do that it something special and means so much more.

I had to drive back home to the midlands when all I wanted to do was stay in the town and enjoy.
The next morning, at my desk at 8.30AM, when a lad came in and said that his local slowly got wind of what was happening during the game, and the whole boozer went mental when Massimo's goal went in.
I was so proud.

a few things really stand out from that ITV footage..

the controlled passing game is a different game to watch, so many - hopeful - passes forward compared to now..
20 years since we almost folded - seems odd because 86 to 2006 seemed a century ago :-D not 20 years..
Sven in the crowd, McLaren pre England..

Time marches on.. small town in Europe..

I also remember getting back to our local (the Red Lion in Norton) and all of us who had been to the match just walking in stunned 🤣🤣🤣....I also remember Tracy, the landlady, being over the moon because the pub emptied so quick at last orders cos we all rushed home to watch the highlights which were re-run about 11 I think 🤣🤣🤣

What a night. WHAT a night!! I’m reduced to wreckage every time I watch this. Just like Cardiff, this was catharsis on a mass-scale. The very opposite of a trauma, the unbridled ecstasy is embedded in my bones and DNA and I relive it in its entirety every time I watch the footage. Live, it was indescribable - the noise and energy after Maccarone’s goal and the final whistle will live with me forever - it was seismic and visceral. And WONDERFUL.
