Thanks Picto and Trug,I remember it was common knowledge that Charlie Amer did not want promotion and it was the dropping of Rooks that seemed to shock and anger many of us Boro fans at the time. Nice to get a precise date,1969,I was 13 then.
 
Very sad news. I remember the chant “He’s here, he’s there, he’s every f’ing where - Dickie Rooks, Dickie Rooks! “ from the Holgate end.
He really put everything into playing for the Boro.
RIP big man.

I was 14 and I remember vividly my friend telling me about about why we didn't get promoted. This raised the question in my mind did the players throw the last few games so that we just missed out.

Charlie Amer was not chairman in 1969, he was just a director. The Thomas brothers were running the show. Amer became chairman in 73 and Boro were promoted that season 73/74.
