By cashing in, I mean there’ll be someone in the champo ready to give us 2.5-3m, I’m under no illusion we will get the 7 or 8 that was mentioned a few years ago

Rather crucially.
Dieng is a far better keeper than Clarke is centre back - and far more important to us.

Given that we've FINALLY adopted the wing back formation, and are reaping the rewards, next season I would go with:
RVDB Lenihan Clarke
I think that would be an incredibly strong defence.

With wing backs I would like mcnair in the back 3,probably for lenihan. Doubtless there would be some rotation.

Yeah think that's right. Nothing against Glover, he's done OK but he's not good enough to be starting regularly in the championship. It's a big difference between him and Dieng.
Ability-wise there's not much between Clarke, Lenihen, Fry and McNair. But what Clarke gives you thats better than the others is aggression.
A lot of our defensive issues IMO have come from the defenders being too passive and standing off players. Clarke attacks the ball more and I think we've lacked that at times.
I think some of the best pairings consist of a stopper type and a more cultured type. Southgate and Ehiogu, Woodgate and Pogatetz, Mowbray and Pallister, Maddren and Boam.
If you have two who are just trying to read the game and sweep up, it's far too nice/comfortable to play against.

the return of dieng cant be overstated. Not only is he a far better keeper he is calmer presence, we are not getting caught playing out from the back where glovers passing would put defenders under huge pressure

Clarke trying to get his head to the ball whilst laid prone in the box against Southampton tells you all you need to know about the bloke. We love players who give everything for the team. Been a big fan of Clarke since he arrived and can’t overstate the impact that injury had on the team for such a long period. With Lenihan fit again and if RVB isn’t sold for the short term profit we could have a very strong back 3 next year.also we are just better with Dieng in the side.
We haven’t played wingbacks for the last two games.it will only ever be carrick St’s second choice.
I think RVDB and Clarke. With Fry and Lenihan back ups.
It was great to see but if Engel doesn’t clear the ball off the line before and after, he doesn’t get the chance or looks pretty stupid. But the people keep saying Engel can’t defend, it doesn’t fit their narrative to mention this

He can't defend 1-vs-1 against a pacey player. Needs to work on his reaction speed, body shape, and core strength over the summer.

He does mart, but I wouldn't be surprised if he turns into a very good full back.

yes, he has great energy, doesn't shirk a battle, can get a decent cross in, and has a good shot. He's far from the write off some painted him, but needs a bit of work on a few things....to be expected coming from a lower league level.
