Brian Clough

Yeah, I meant dodgy in the corrupt sense.

It was definitely part of the reason for his later requests, but he'd started putting in requests before he became the prolific scorer he was.
Clough played 10 games in 1955/56 season and scored 3 goals. Charle Wayman was the usual number 9 and he scored 15 goals in 23 games. So perhaps Brian Clough asked to leave in that season, because the following season he played 41 games and scored 38 goals.

You have to remember that there was a fixed maximum wage when Clough was playing. So there was little financial advantage in moving..

Surely though players had ambition and wanted to win medals still.
Playing for a man united Liverpool or Leeds would be the top clubs at the time

Is it any wonder Clough put in transfer requests with the way the Boro defense was for much to the time he was here. They drew 6 - 6 at Charlton one game.

Reports of a few bent players on the take also plus a club with questionable ambition at the time.

RIP Brian.
If we were able to put him in a Boro side now, with our existing squad we would get promotion easily.

He wanted to leave because as fast as he was scoring the defence was letting them in - and it wasnt cos of ability.

defenders were being paid off to let goals in - its all in the records - corruption/brown envelopes

My Dad watched Clough play, and rates him as his favourite ever player. He's said that this was going on on quite a few occasions.

I love the Cloughie stories on YouTube, there's hundreds on him, main from when he was a manager though.

The videos of Mark Crossley telling Clough stories are great.
The one in particular about him getting Crossley to sign a blank contract is just unimaginable in today's football, as is the one about Clough getting him to turn out for his son's Sunday league club.

I saw all of Clough’s home games for Boro and I have not seen a more deadly goal scorer to this day.
He always gave 100% when he played , and when most of the Boro players signed a round robin (courageous bunch) letter demanding his removal as captain, it was generally assumed he was letting the side down by trying too hard.

I do not remember Brian Clough repeatedly asking for a move - are you mixing him up with Mannion who did demand a move quite often? It is a matter of record that Clough went to Sunderland and was a consistent scorer for the Mackems.
I am sure however that some of his goals were in the old First Division.
Yes you are right he did score for Sunderland in the top flight .

Liverpool have not always been a top club apart from in the head of their fans :)
Liverpool were in the old 2nd division from about 1953 to 1962. So a similar record to Boro at that point.
They appointed Bill Shankley in the 1950s ( yes the same Scot that Boro apparently rejected after an interview) and the rest is history.

The problem is that I think a load of stories ex players tell about clough are imagined aren't they? And the rest heavily embellished?
