Fry, Hackney, Coburn and Bangura nearing return from injury

I think Thomas' boro career ended the moment he had a wild swing at the ball hit it up in the air and did donuts trying to figure out where the ball was. Carrick subbed him two minutes later, must have been thinking wtf was that?

You can never have been to many Boro games @Ex Footy Legs if you think Fry doesn’t lump it most of the time he gets the ball. A decent enough defender at times but he is an a poor footballer on the ball
crawl back into your negative box bonny lad...you are so boring with your limited views....i forgot though....you know Soooo much more than Carrick.....when i see him tomorrow i'll be minded to ask him to ring you about Fry and his future....don't wait in tomorrow night though

Hardly negative. Just think Clarke VDB and McNair all performed better this season. Fry has digressed rather than progressed.

Amazing how his career has regressed, started and was very good in an FA cup winning team in 2020. Regular for the England U21s, tipped to one day play for the national team...but has been our worst Left Back this season even including Coulson.

Diego, your assertion that fry hoofs the ball comes from where?

I am this because every stat suggests that isn't true. He has a better pass completion rate than every one of our cb's. His long passes and total pass completion are better than all our cb's and way above cb's in the division generally.

I am afraid you are just wrong on that point.

Watching him with my eyes. His long passes may sometimes find our players but then we can lose the ball from the knockdowns anyway and I feel he chooses to pass like that because he isn’t comfortable passing into midfield.

I haven’t checked the stats this is just from the watching him myself and he makes me feel the most uneasy both defensively and when he’s on the ball. I prefer Clarke, Lenihan and VDB to him. Also prefer McNair to him if we’re playing 3 at the back.

It’s just an opinion, doesn’t mean I am wrong.

You are entitled to your opinion, of course. A season worth of stats aren't usually wrong though.

I just prefer watching us without him. The last 3 games have shown we can win without him.

Just an opinion not expecting everyone to agree because he is rated highly by a lot of fans but I know there is plenty think the same way I do as seen on this thread.

Anyway, bored of talking about it now. Looking forward to the game later.

Oh we can win without him. You are right. I don't think there is a lot between our CB's at the minute. They each have their own strengths and weaknessess. I even rate Clarke. He is brilliant in the air. You would assume VDB will go on to be the best of them, given a bit of time.

I have no idea who would be picked if they were all fit, I suspect lenihan and vdb if we play 2 center backs and if we play 3 one from clarke and fry, I don't think McNair will be here next season as much as I would want him to be. However, I would be reasonably happy with any 2 or 3 from the cb's we have available..

All he can do. So poor on the ball.

You call him poor on the ball like we have a glut of Beckenbauers at our disposal. He's no better or worse than what we have. Clarke has a bit of composure on the ball actually, i'll give him that.

Oh so you just don't like the way he passes the ball despite his success?

A better start to the season would have seen us out of sight by now. Also recently giving the lower order 3 points from our benevolent fund:)

ifs, buts, maybe. When we pick the bones over the season we just haven't been consistent enough, with or without injuries.

Key learning points for me are:

- don't throw 8 players in across the first 7 league games like we did this season. We need a slow and steady introduction of new players and some consistency of team selection.

- Getting players in after the season has started means the new signings don't get a pre-season to learn the system we play. That's really important to a team that wants to play passing intricate football as there is less margin for error, and more need to be in synch with each other.

- Our fullback positions have been a nightmare this season, so many players, so little consistency. Need to work on getting proper resolutions for these roles

- If we are playing possession football we need to have a proper CDM in the squad to stop the counter

- You can't go into the season with just 2 dedicated CFs

- You can't go into the season with 12 players having less than 100 league games at this level or equivalent.

Plan:
Get key positions in early. CDM, CF

Other signings may need to get up to speed before we let them play

Any defensive signings must be comfortable on the ball

Make sure we have some experience in the first team

Get any sales out the way quickly, if we are to lose a key player, then it needs to be done early so we know what budget we are working with, otherwise we end up with spendable money sat in the bank again. Discuss with Hackney, and Rav if they want to stay. If yes, then great, if they are open to offers,s et them a deadline of when to get it resolved, otherwise they stay.

All good points but disappointed you didn't reference the summer war chest,
