Inside our autistic minds - Middlesbrough

My son is 10 and has autism. It makes everyday things we take for granted, very difficult and i will admit, there are lots that as a family we still don’t understand. We wouldn’t change him for the world and we know no different but it’s surprising at the lack of empathy and understanding amongst others especially adults.

I remember watching this last time it was broadcast. It was really helpful to me ... as I coach a girl who is on the spectrum, It helped enormously with my understanding of her .... and also made me understand why certain things that I might do as a coach drive her nuts (ie. adapting a training session mid-way through, because I can see that she is struggling with the work load .... a sensible thing to do in most cases, but not with her). As it happens, a good friend of mine who has just turned 40, finally got her confirmed diagnosis yesterday. 40 years she has lived with "issues" and not known what it was all about, leading to anxiety and depression etc. I hope the diagnosis helps her overall health.

Watched it with my autistic partner. Was helpful to compare and discuss her traits to those on the show. Always a learning process even after 9 years together. What alot of people dont understand are autistic meltdowns and autistic burnout. People make judgements without the right knowledge in my experience...myself included in early stages of our relationship. Programmes like this are aways insightful and increase awareness, which is good.

Absolutely right.
Imagine in the workplace a 30 year old talking to superiors about 'burn out'?

It's not likely to end well unless they try and understand

Very true 1finny. My partner has lost a couple of jobs because she couldnt turn up from burnout or was late (time blindness is another trait) for work Thankfully found her niche as a self employed artist working on her terms.

Where can it be watched? I missed it the first time round and would love to be able to get more understanding of my daughters traits and struggles.

That is great to hear 👏👏

Very insightful, everybody has a little bit in one way or another.
With all due respect, that's not a helpful thing to say at all. Everyone can seem a little bit on the spectrum at times, but autism, adhd etc, is about every day functioning, behaviours and habits that can be so debilatating that you can struggle to do anything, it can ruin relationships, you can get fired from your job, you can become an addict. It's fitting into a world that just isn't set up for you, where you mask behaviours just to fit in, otherwise you might seem weird to everyone.
