Level playing field for Boro next season?

The 3 that come down will sell their best players for big money , and hoover up the best championship players available , such as Callum O'hare on a free. We can't compete with that I doubt .
Sad that we are talking about next season already , I was hoping we would give it a go this season.

The scenario.

1) Leicester, Leeds and Southampton get promoted and take their parachute money with them.
2) Sheff. Utd., Burnley and Luton come straight back down.
3) All three lose any decent players they may have signed permanently or on loan.
4) None of the three owners wish to 'have another go' (we know Sheff. Utd. is a basket case).
5) Boro have some headroom in its P&S figures and Gibbo 'goes for it'.

Here's hoping 🙏
Luton have stadium financing commitments too

that's no different to any season, the difference is that the three coming down will have a lower quality starting point than Southampton, Leicester and Leeds and a lower matchday revenue too.

Luton have planned to come back down so I would be keen for them to stay up. My preference would be Notts Forest along with Sheffield Utd and Burnley. I think Forest will be a real basket case financially and their owner is a loose cannon. Burnley have spent a fortune on players and will need a firesale; I can also see them firing Kompany. Sheffield Utd are absolutely hosed. Financially, those three coming down are probably our best bet. I can see one of them getting their act together and going straight back up but possibly no more than that.

Assuming Leeds, Leicester and Soton go up then Hull, Coventry, Ipswich and Watford all look they can finance a promotion push next season. If WBA and Norwich don't go up, they are going to be in a world of pain. In strictly PSR terms, next season is the best season we'll have to spend big on promotion while we still have the benefit of the Tav and Spence sales.

not a bad call, Forest would surely be in trouble with such an enormous squad and having spent according to transfermrkt they ran a transfer deficit this season of -E53m, and -E190m the year before.

They will have enormous wages on a squad of 42 players (not including loans), of which around 32 were signed on prem contracts. 5 players would be out of contract in the summer, another 4 would lose value due to 1 year left on contract. Gibbs-White, Taiwo and Danilo would all be sold for good fees. They would still have a squad with some quality in, but zero balance or cohesion.

Hull are relying on loan players arent they? They could suffer, as we have, when those loan players return to their parent clubs. Coventry are always at risk of having to sell, their best players, Ipswich started like a train but have fallen away badly and are looking very average atm, Watford are no great shakes.

the point im making is I dont see them having any great advantage at the start of next season over us

If Everton go down I can see them being a team that struggles with adapting to the Championship, and being there much longer than they anticipated. Unlike the 3 teams that went down this season.

While it's true that big relegated clubs don't always bounce back (villa were down for 3 years), if Everton come down, it's is likely to be due to points deductions: I think they can take the 10 points and still stay up. If they get another 10, they'll struggle. However, that would then mean a mid table PL team was in the championship, rather than the usual standard of relegated team.

The problem Everton would have is the costs associated with the new stadium. I imagine losing the PL income even with parachute payments would really make that a difficult thing to juggle.

Sadly, I think the days of Gibbo going for it are long gone. We could have gone for it this season by keeping Akpom and adding a few more players.

Fixed that for you...

No, I'm not saying they have an advantage over us next season. Next season, I think we probably have an advantage over everyone but the parachute teams and maybe Watford.

Hull will have money to play with but may go back down the loans path because they won't be able to spend enough to keep the quality up with permanent sales. If next season doesn't work, they'll be selling.

If Burnley, Sheffield Utd and Forest come down, they'll still end up with better squads than us but they'll be unbalanced and shell-shocked.

There's a lot of ifs involved but we ought to be able to start next season in a really good position.
