What have Coventry done differently to us?

What Coventry and the likes of Brentford do is make a tidy sum on a player and then search established leagues for another gem as a replacement not scour a pub league on the other side of the world.
Glover had already played over here, McGree started over there, Silvera could come good at this level. Rogers and Dieng were playing here, Rav, Bangura and Engel are from decent nations. Bit daft to basically pick on Silvera as symptomatic of some perceived poor policy, when actually he has improved the 6 months he's been here into the squad player he was brought in to be

Spent more, had less injuries and had a manager who has been there a long time who has been able to implement his style of play over an extended period of time.

they've spent 2.5x to effectively stand still at around 6th place (*in fact I have them probably finishing 7th). In those terms they haven't been successful. I'm not sure if they've developed more saleable assets either. To invest 30m euro in your squad in the champo and drop a couple of places isn't a sign of good investment.
That's a fair point. I don't totally agree because, like us, they not only had to replace their two star players they also had to replace several key loans. They had £15m more than us to do it with but I think even managing to get close to last season's position gives them something to build on. I don't know who oversees recruitment at Coventry but their ability to spot and develop a player is really, really good. If they can sustain this over the next 3-5 years people will be talking about the Coventry "model" just as much as the Brentford one.

Coventry recruit very well - they're a few years ahead of us with our new "model".

Callum O'Hare came from Villa U21 for free. Ben Sheaf came from Arsenal U21 for a very low fee.

Looking at the table tonight, I remembered this thread. Six weeks ago Coventry had done everything right had a fantastic manager and recruitment team and every player was measurably superior to ours. In contrast we were run by chancers and fools (or something like that)...

(Not everyone said this just a few)

One place and two points is the difference now, though they do have a game in hand. What a difference an unbeaten run can make. I don't think either team will make the playoffs and even if either of us does we're neither of us strong enough to stand much chance.

Does that make us better positioned for next season...

I’d love to finish above them. They sp&nked all their money in the summer, from selling Gyokeres. We only spent half what we could and have stayed level, despite having a rediculous injury crisis all season. We now have the money from another sale and they haven’t really got any big sellable assets. I think we’ll be 10+ points above them next season

This doesn't match reality at all. As I said in post #58 they have spent what they brought in and have stayed the same, which is what you would expect. They got 70 points last season, 7 points from their last 6 games will see them on the same points total. I think they will probably get more and they are going to Wembley in a fortnight for an FA Cup semi final so they have stood still, if not slightly improved with a net spend of £0.

We have gone backwards unless we win our final 5 games which will give us 76 vs last season's 75. We haven't stayed level because we weren't level. We were better than them last season and this season we aren't.

I don't think there's anything of our season's performance compared to theirs to gloat about (unless there is a very unusual set of final results).

We're clearly not as good as we were last season.

Id argue we're considerably better than we were 1 second after the full time whistle in the playoffs. The Loan players were nothing to do with us by then. Ok, we had Chuba, but he would not have masked all gaps we had at that point.

So we've gone backwards, but our success last year was us standing in the shoulders of others.

They ended up trying to replace 2 key players with the £35 million they brought in.
We had to replace 5 key players with the £12m we brought in. Which task was easier?

In the main we did really well with summer buys dieng rogers latte vdb all super signings. Fullbacks really poor engel bangura and even thomas poor. Silvera not convinced either. Greenwood terrible

Mark Robbins is really street wise when it comes to getting a result from a match, hes willing to play a different system more often than MC if he thinks there is a weakness in the other team and he thinks he can exploit it, he will not adhere to a style no matter what.

Think the player they would make the most money on whenever they sell him is their right back - Van Ewijk.

Looks destined to play in the premier league.

That’s one way to look at it. We have spent less than we brought in for a couple of seasons, and are within a few points of them, instead of a few ahead. There’s a strong argument that with the huge injury problems, we could still be ahead of them and indeed, we could still be ahead at the end.
Both teams made a cup semi, agreed.

Cov lost their two best players and gained about 33m for them. They invested all of that.
We lost possibly our 4 best players, but 3 were loanees and one was last year of contract meaning that we only received 12m. We spent that, but hadn't even spent the profit from the previous years big sales and we sold one of the players we signed for a huge profit within 6 months.

I'm don't think that Coventry's squad (owned players not loans) is any better than 12 months ago, and they haven't done better on the pitch, looking like they will finish 1 or 2 places lower. We look like finishing 3 or 4 lower, but we've massively increased the quality of our playing assets, no longer relying on loans, while also having generated a healthy profit on sales that can be reinvested without any further sales.

If we hadn't had the injuries I'm confident we'd be 6th and improving all the time. I'm happy that we are moving forwards and if we finish above them, then it's proof for me that we've invested better and will benefit longer term.
