I assume he does. Otherwise he wouldn't be singing about it. But it does raise the question, why is he singing about it instead of informing the authorities and telling them everything he knows. Unless, of course, he's on the side of those breaking out in which case he's not actually doing them any favours, is he?

Look, I know there's going to be a jailbreak ok? Definitely from one of the jails in this town, but that's all I know, apart of course that it's tonight. Sometimes you get wind of these things but you have to go off imperfect or incomplete information. Just passing on what I know, if the authorities don't want to beef up security or something that's on them - don't shoot the messenger.

So let's assume he knows there's a jailbreak, and what town it's going to be in, but doesn't have all the specifics.

Then the correct way to express that would surely be "tonights there's going to be a jailbreak at one of the jails in (let's assume for the purposes of this example) Dublin" otherwise he's leaving a lot open to interpretation.

What happens if the person listening to the song is a police chief in say London, and assembles a massive security operation, just to find out there was never any plans for a jailbreak in London at all and Lynott's lack of specificity has cost the tax payers thousands in police overtime.

Irresponsible I say.

This rather thickens the plot. The jailbreak is from one of potentially several jails somewhere in this town. Dublin and London are cities, so they're ruled out. In fact how many actual towns have more than one jail? Tring? Must narrow it right down.

So I asked ChatGPT and it doesn't know, so again Lynott's constant toying with his audience is getting rather tiresome. Just tell us where it's happening man, or better still alert the authorities in the respective police district.

In my view the jailbreak occurs at the point the prisoners break free.
Andy Dufresne didn't break out of jail behind a poster of Raquel Welch (or Rita Hayworth). He broke out at the end of the sewage pipe.

In any case, that is missing the point of the song.
Phil is surreptitiously warning people that there will be escaped prisoners somewhere in town, so best keep an eye out for them and avoid them. They mean business.
Exactly where they will be, he refuses to divulge. He's not a grass.
