How many times do you hear that the ref has to be absolutely certain it is a penalty before he gives it!?
I just can't get my head round this decision.

Seeing it on tele first time never looked like a penna.. might have been something lasted with Tommy Smith.. just going by first look.. on the tele..The referee sees it once. In real time.
No complaints, Fry should have been cannier - like Stewart was.
This is a really good point, I can't think of many sports which throw up circumstances where the balance of play is so heavily weighted. The striker holds all the cards,he can pull the defender usually goes unnoticed the defender clears, or as today he pulls the defender then throws himself to the deck , red for opponent and penalty. The rules need changing so that when a striker and defender are one on one ,if the striker fouls the defender in any way , he gets a card. Shearer was great at it, until Uriah Rennie saw through what he was doing and sent him off, Rennie was soon discarded and the red over turned.
Nah, if you look the Sunderland player actually trips him which results in Smith falling on him. Accidental but you can't give a foul for that.Seeing it on tele first time never looked like a penna.. might have been something lasted with Tommy Smith.. just going by first look.. on the tele..
I was responding to the point re the foot being on the line and it’s a pen.
The fact you’ve had chance to review this many times is great, but the referee gets one chance, communicates with the assistant and has t9 make a decision.
The player has been very clever, he’s made the referee make a decision and on this occasion the referee has, on second, third, fourth plus views he has probably got it wrong.
He doesn’t have the benefit of those replays.
Every single poster on here would have been screaming for that if it was Akpom doing it.
Just the first look isn’t itNah, if you look the Sunderland player actually trips him which results in Smith falling on him. Accidental but you can't give a foul for that.
Yeah, he defo ‘won’ the penalty and did his job for Sunderland.. delivering goals. On the TV, referee has a different view and can see Stewart ahead of Fry, Fry using his arms and then there is contact and Stewart falls into the area.
Can fully understand why it was given, as mentioned we‘d all be screaming for it in our favour at the other end.
Anyway, pointless going on. Penalty - very debatable, foul - debatable, Fry outwitted - absolutely, Stewart “clever” - totally.
We move on, it won’t break or make the season imo.
It's a penalty. What is Fry doing with his arms?
Stewart waits till he gets in the box and throws himself down but Fry still has his arms over him.
Keep saying Naive but the guy's about 26
