That was outside the box

How many times do you hear that the ref has to be absolutely certain it is a penalty before he gives it!?

I just can't get my head round this decision.

The referee sees it once. In real time.

No complaints, Fry should have been cannier - like Stewart was.
Seeing it on tele first time never looked like a penna.. might have been something lasted with Tommy Smith.. just going by first look.. on the tele..

The striker holds all the cards,he can pull the defender usually goes unnoticed the defender clears, or as today he pulls the defender then throws himself to the deck , red for opponent and penalty. The rules need changing so that when a striker and defender are one on one ,if the striker fouls the defender in any way , he gets a card. Shearer was great at it, until Uriah Rennie saw through what he was doing and sent him off, Rennie was soon discarded and the red over turned.
This is a really good point, I can't think of many sports which throw up circumstances where the balance of play is so heavily weighted.

Defenders really do have it all to lose in this situation, whereas forwards can literally do nothing (or dive) knowing full well they'll get a decision.

As mentioned above, if you look at top class referees they'll often give nothing in instances like this where there's some doubt. It's effectively the "fairest" way of managing the situation, as no team gains an advantage where the circumstances aren't clear cut. It might not be fully to the letter of the law but allows them to swerve a difficult call and move onto the next decision.

Whoever this abomination was today clearly thought he got the call correct however as he had an opportunity to level it up later and declined, although in fairness I don't think that was pen either.

Nah, if you look the Sunderland player actually trips him which results in Smith falling on him. Accidental but you can't give a foul for that.

I was responding to the point re the foot being on the line and it’s a pen.

The fact you’ve had chance to review this many times is great, but the referee gets one chance, communicates with the assistant and has t9 make a decision.

The player has been very clever, he’s made the referee make a decision and on this occasion the referee has, on second, third, fourth plus views he has probably got it wrong.

He doesn’t have the benefit of those replays.

Every single poster on here would have been screaming for that if it was Akpom doing it.

That’s what they get paid to do though mate. If they can’t get them calls right in real time then they’re not doing their job properly are they. He’s also got his assistant in line with the play for a different angle, between them they should be calling that right.

We were well off the pace today, didn’t do enough, but that was a killer moment in the game that he got wrong.

On the TV, referee has a different view and can see Stewart ahead of Fry, Fry using his arms and then there is contact and Stewart falls into the area.

Can fully understand why it was given, as mentioned we‘d all be screaming for it in our favour at the other end.

Anyway, pointless going on. Penalty - very debatable, foul - debatable, Fry outwitted - absolutely, Stewart “clever” - totally.

We move on, it won’t break or make the season imo.
Yeah, he defo ‘won’ the penalty and did his job for Sunderland.. delivering goals.

I’d be laughing my head off if it was one of our lot doing the same.

Sunderland are a canny team and they have as chronically underrated manager in Tony Mowbray. Hope they appreciate him.

Carrick will have learnt a lot from that game and as you say.. on to the next!

We have a top six finish to make!

Fry needed to stop fouling him sooner. Then the ref would have seen the dive and realised it was well outside the box

It's a penalty. What is Fry doing with his arms?
Stewart waits till he gets in the box and throws himself down but Fry still has his arms over him.
Keep saying Naive but the guy's about 26

He doesn’t have his arms all over him as he enters the box at all.

Stewart is still not in the box here and Fry is nowhere near him.

Two things.

1) If Stewart hadn’t fallen over the referee wouldn’t have give a penalty.
2) If Fry had fallen over as well the referee would not have given a penalty.

Being honest at football costs you.

where’s your evidence to back that up? Plenty of posters have posted photos and videos which strongly seem to suggest there is zero contact inside the box, I’d be interested to see if you have anything which suggests the opposite.
