Lady Susan Hussey quits over remarks to charity boss Ngozi Fulani

Here is the full conversation, as recounted by Ms Fulani:
Lady SH: Where are you from?
Me: Sistah Space.
SH: No, where do you come from?
Me: We're based in Hackney.
SH: No, what part of Africa are you from?
Me: I don't know, they didn't leave any records.
SH: Well, you must know where you're from, I spent time in France. Where are you from?
Me: Here, the UK.
SH: No, but what nationality are you?
Me: I am born here and am British.
SH: No, but where do you really come from, where do your people come from?
Me: 'My people', lady, what is this?
SH: Oh I can see I am going to have a challenge getting you to say where you're from. When did you first come here?
Me: Lady! I am a British national, my parents came here in the 50s when...
SH: Oh, I knew we'd get there in the end, you're Caribbean!
Me: No lady, I am of African heritage, Caribbean descent and British nationality.
SH: Oh so you're from...

This isn't just a one off politically incorrect statement that she has made by mistake!! This sort of behaviour and beliefs are ingrained in these people. Disgusting

Quoting this to make it even easier to find.

It's got nothing to do with saying where are you from vs what are your roots?

Its the stuff like "you must know", "I am going to have a challenge getting you to say where you're from", "oh, I knew we'd get there in the end".

It's rude and arrogant and yes, racism, because the only reason she's badgered this person 10 times about where she's from is cause she has black skin.

Why was she recording the conversation anyway ? She turned up in African clothing ( fine nothing wrong with that ) knowing she’d no doubt be asked about her family origins by Hussey, then pulls the racism card when she is asked. The whole thing smacks of a set up, designed to get this woman publicity - and i repeat once again that asking someone where their family roots hail from is not racist

It really isn’t - unless you have a pretty twisted way of looking at things. If someone asked me where I’m really from I’d say i think some of my ancestors came from Scandinavia, and i certainly wouldn’t think they were racist for asking.
'twisted way of looking at things' - that's a strange thing to say

Yes, that whole condescending tone is poor

I’ve been in Indian restaurants and chatted to the owners and asked similar things, as they’re nearly always Bangladeshi. I wasn’t being racist, I was just making conversation and taking an interest in them

But when they give you an answer, would you follow them round the restaurant saying "no that's not where you're really from, where are you really from? I'm going to find out where you're really from. You're from India really. Where in India are you from? When did you come here from India?"

I'm guessing not! Because you're probably a nice bloke who doesn't seem themself as superior to others and knows how to get along with people and have great interactions and conversations. That's not the same for the warped folk in the royal household, obviously.

She could just be a typical upper class toff who speaks in that tone to any minions whom she deems are “beneath” her, regardless of the topic of conversation.

It’s as if she’s saying “don’t you understand my question? Are you a bit dim?”

I was just typing the same sort of thing in my last post (y) I think it's exactly that. Lady Husseys been knocking about with the queen for what, 60 odd years? I bet in that time nobodys ever told her she's being a bell end :ROFLMAO: it can't be good for you.

Interesting thread. Not sure where I am on this. My dad said to me last night that be really enjoyed the women's euros and now he considers himself woke as ****. He's a different generation.

She was rude, absolutely. Was she being overtly racist, or just using what little world experience she has. Again I don't know.

It wasn't a great look for anyone. She is probably just speaking as an upper class twit, as someone else alluded to.

All that said, would it surprise anyone if most of the aged royal firm were racist?

Jesus Christ.

If someone does something racist to you are you really'pulling the card'

I suppose if an away fan punched you in the face totally unprovoked, that you'd be pulling the 'punch me in the face and make my nose bleed card' ?

FFS
Your analogy is ridiculous. As I’ve already pointed out Marlene Headley is black, therefore it’s perfectly reasonable to assume her relatives came to the U.K. fairly recently. Why is it a racist to ask where someone’s relatives came from originally ? I think she’s a grifter, after as much media attention as she can get so her charity gets more donations, from which i understand she already benefits from a very generous wage for herself

I thought she was trying to ascertain her ethnicity, done clumsily i admit, but I feel it was no more sinister than that, Ngozi Fulani could have explained that she was British but her family had moved here from X, defusing the whole situation.

Of course she could, but that wouldn’t have got her any publicity

So you can only ask someone’s ancestral roots if you’re the same colour or ethnic background as them - ridiculous! !
nope you can ask anyone, but as an opening gambit when you meet them, in which they clearly and politely let you know that they don't appreciate this line of questioning, then to continue is rude, arrogant and racist. I mean who the fook did she think she is? BEcause she's got a title of "Lady" and represents the royals she thinks she has the right to pressgang someone into talking about something against their will. Rediculous.

she COULD, but she doesn't HAVE TO. She made it pretty obvious from the transcript that she was politely declining that discussion because she is their for her work, not for her ethnicity. What should have happened, is Hussey should have taken a pretty obvious hint. Hussey has spend 60 years meeting people on behalf of the royals and she couldn't read that her questioning was deemed inappropriate?

Imagine at footy match and every time a black player born and bred in UK gets the ball the crowd starts chanting

Where are you really from?
Where are you really fcuking from?
