Why do football managers think fans don't understand tactics or team selections?

I have always found this a litte bizzare, when managers come out with waffle about it's not the tactics or it's not the players playing in this position or that position

As a fan who has watched football for over 30 years, i would like to think over the thousands of minutes of watching the game, watching players, watching different tactical approaches
I have a full understanding of the game

Do i really need to manage a team before i can deduce if the tactics are working , or if a player is up to a standard or worth the transfer fee or playing in a system and position that
suits his attributes?

Lost count of the number of times i've seen us sign a player and i've been able to judge his ability after about 10 minutes and hardly ever been wrong about it

Do fans have a good concept of football tactics, and players ability or are we all just deluded misguided plebs who pay but are not entitled to an opinion?

I see the same patterns backed up by Morrison comments. It's easy to play us park the bus let boro have possession when we mssa a pass up counter and score while we have pressed high up. We do best when teams come at us and we defend counter the when we are asked to break sides down we are awful

football message boards such as this one and the others - prove that 'fans' know next to nothing about 'football' time and time again - its laughable at what some type.

they like to 'think' they have - but in all honesty they havnt a clue - me and you inc

Think it's a bit of both to be honest. Many fans probably understand a lot more than some managers give them credit for.

Some fans (often vocal ones) are idiots.

And there are some tactical nuances that most fans won't be aware of, or stuff done by some players that isn't immediately obvious how it benefits the team, but I'm sure is really important and data/stats etc, beyond the obvious, probably back that up for the manager but fans won't get that insight.

Plus football is a highly subjective game anyway as demonstrated by fans and pundits up and down the country week in, week out.

When i say i can judge a player in 10 minutes, i am predominantly referring to the boss of all markers, technical ability, because that's the ultimate mark of a good player

If you can't see after 10 minutes a players technical ability you simply don't understand football imho, not delusion at all, just fact, no different to watching any player in any sport
with a degree of technical ability applicable, its really not that difficult

It’s all part of planet football that is very insular. It’s why I don’t like the term Punter as it implies we are somehow on the outside.

I bow to your superior knowledge 🤣🤣

go to any 'boro fans' board for the Cardiff game - go on do - and show me any fan/poster who raised any concerns or made a valid point of negativity around the boro team selection V Cardiff, before the match kicked off.

plenty of groans and moans and wild accusations during the match and after the match - but, before the game when the team was announced, not a pip squeek.

last Tuesday they were hero's this Tuesday they were useless and duds - it was the same fans making the calls. we did have a knowledgeable crowd once, but thats long gone.

Most people i spoke to before the game questioned 1 up front against a **** poor team. Also questioned mcnair starting. I seen plenty on here were for steffan to come back in. So thats rubbish.

Some fans are knowledgeable some aren't, exactly the same on most topics in life. At the end of the day its a game about opinions.

The team and wilder are being questioned rightly so. He picks the best team in his opinion just because he won promotion with Sheffield u doesn't mean hes always right.

Tbf I'd guess there's something going on here where the type of players we sign are almost all at a certain level. There's only a few exceptionally good or exceptionally bad so why wouldn't you be able to rate them most of the time.

It's like saying whenever I roll a dice I always guess I'll get between 2 and 5 and I'm usually right!

Those are the three key attributes of any player, prehaps i exaggerated in reference to 10 minutes, ok, but players like Saville, Assombalonga, flint etc, if you watched them even for 45 minutes
you could see the club have being totally ripped off, if your incapable of that assesment, even in that short period of time watching them, you simply do not understand football

How can scout players like Saville or Flint for that period of time and think they were worth what we paid, its embarrasing

I said to my mate after about 10 mins. That kid there is a player isnt he and pointed out an opposition player.

Then Dael Fry made a mistake the ball got played inside and the afore-mentioned player whacked the ball in the top bin.

I turned to my mate and said 'told ya'

Game Boro vs Norwich
Player James Maddison

Sometimes ya can see quality a mile off when its clear.

You ever thought about taking a job in scouting?

Been the problem for a long while really, even going back to Aitor’s side, although at least we didn’t get hit on the break, we just struggled to break teams down that sat back.
We have been well and truly sussed now - a change in formation could be the answer, but will Wilder do it. We certainly need someone up top with Muniz for starters anyway

I had the same argument in January on here when i said i could see after watching Connolly for 45minutes he would never make a decent footballer, his movement and vision were woeful. Similarly i am sure some of us remember Phil Whelan and thought at the time what was Robbo thinking signing that. Wilder seems to do a good line in dismissing fan criticism, with his i am much more knowledgeable than you persona.
