Relegation play-offs and an AllStar game

New Chelsea owner proposes - no automatic relegation but a play-offs between bottom 4 to see who goes down (doesn’t say how many games or how many go down!)

And a north v south AllStar game

Why? To generate more money.!! I wish these parasites would sod off from our game! Sick the money at all costs attitude.

All star game sounds ridiculous.

The bottom 4 having playoffs with the winner of the final staying up sounds exciting, especially if you finish bottom 3. If you finish 4th bottom then it sounds terribly unfair.

Except for the fact that Boehly's proposals would still result in 3 teams being relegated.

Not saying I'm for it by the way, just that you are wrong to be saying "I told you so" about scrapping relegation at this stage.

No it wouldn’t though as it gives the sides already in the prem another bite at the cherry so in effect could mean no relegation that year.

This is their dream.

no automatic relegation

Look at the wording.

Not suggestion it for England but what are people's thoughts on relegation/promotion playoffs. They have these in a few countries now (Germany most notably?)

In effect one/some of the bottom sides get a second bite of the cherry against a top side from the league below.

Would be interested to see how many times the lower league is promoted under such a system.

Last year for instance Hertha played Hamburg over 2 legs with the Berlin side coming out 2-1 aggregate winners and both teams staying in their respective divisions.

You show me the wording that states no relegation.

From what I have read, Boehly's suggestion is the bottom 4 go into a play off like the Championship promotion playoff, with the winner staying up. The 3 losers go down.

It's not an idea without merit, although I expect most would say it is unfair. Yet the same was said about the promotion playoffs, i.e. it's unfair on the side finishing 3rd not to go up automatically.

The all star game is however needless nonsense, as that would just be a meaningless exhibition match that nobody wants.

I’ve just looked at it again I thought he was including championship sides in the plan to keep prem sides safe.

It looks like I have misread it at first.

But I do think relegation as we know is under threat look at how close Everton came to going down.

Terrible idea! In 2021 Burnley finished 4th bottom 11 points clear of Fulham - yet they would have had to play extra games just to stay up? Imagine they get a dodgy refereeing decision or an unlucky bounce and lose the game, getting relegated while Fulham, who only got 28 points stayed up.

Utterly bonkers!

This how American sports fans think.

I was talking about the premier league in the us a few years ago with American friends who watch the prem a lot.

And my friends brother turns and say to me why isn’t there a play off competition at the end of the season.

I thought he was confused so I said we do have one to decide the last promotion spot and he stops me and says no.

I mean a play to decide the overall champion of the prem I said but it’s a league the winner is the one that wins the most games in a league.

But he says yes but imagine how great an 8 team play off would be after the league to decide the overall winner…,

He was really keen as were the other Americans in the bar.

I was completely lost as to why you’d need this but that’s how American sports fans think.

They want that final day show down.

Harsh on the team who finishes the season 4th bottom (if they were to end up going down) - but relegation playoffs would be very exciting to be fair!

imagine your star player does an ACL in that game? Or gets a red card and misses your next 2 games. It'll never happen and is a ludicrous concept

I like it in theory but I think the gulf between PL and championship is too big now. I would predict that the PL team would end up staying up most of the time. Look at how much money promoted sides generally need to spend to become competitive in the PL.

20 years ago this would have worked. (Like it used to 40 years ago)

One of the New York Red Bulls games I went to had a ‘Marvel Day’ all of the players on the screen were dressed up on the big screen for when they announced the team. There were stalls in the concourse that were selling this pop toy collectibles of the (I think) players. Everyone got a marvel/New York red bulls poster on the way out.. Americans can’t do sports

Rounders, Netball and Rugby but with pads and crash helmets.. all with cartoon names, mascots, Hollywood ‘leagues’, Hollywood endings. They have no care of the sport and no care for the locality or heritage. Money Money Money - make up their own games, their rules and sell as much tat as they can.
