172,00 voted for our new PM

I'm in a position where I can't have it both ways.

I said Johnson should go; he did not have a mandate to govern, rather his party did. Therefore he was not entitled to cling on to power on this basis.

I can't now turn around and say the party doesn't have a mandate to govern, Johnson did, can I?

Don't see why a general election is not called if a governing party changes its leader. Every person who runs our country should be democratically elected by its people.

By all means let the members choose their party's leader but let the public choose its Prime Minister.

I can't say I like either place that that argument takes us.

One conclusion would be that the nation DID elect Johnson, and he should still be in power.

The other is that the PM would have to be ratified by another election once all the parliamentary seats had been won. I don't think it would ever be possible as we know that the winning party almost always gets less than 50% of the actual vote. Offered a yes/no vote on the leader of the winning party, no PM would ever be elected.

I think we have to pick our poison on this one, and I take comfort from the fact that Truss will not be around long.

I don't think that Johnson would have been outed if a GE was required for a new leader.

I do think though that it is disgusting that 81,000 people have just elected our new PM. I would suggest that something needs to be done about it as this is the 4th PM in 6 years. Suppose though that's the Tories for you - infighting and it's all about themselves.

As much as I despise the Tories they're not doing much different to Labour when Tony Blair stepped down. I do think an early general election is on the cards though. Truss will want her "mandate" which lots of politicians make reference to. Surely any general election results in the Tories finally being booted from government.

Truss is possibly the weakest PM for many many years ... she is utter crap thinking on her feet ... she should get shot down in PMQ is starmer has been eating meat ...

The system is the system. The same one every other time this happened. We elect an MP and expect them to make decisions on our behalf. That includes choosing who leads their party as much as it includes making decisions in the commons. The reason so few people get to decide is because so few people are interested enough to become a member of the party. Is there anything stopping every Tory voter also becoming a Tory member? Same for Labour obviously.

Put it this way. If there was a mandatory GE for a change of leader then there's no way they'd have voted to remove Johnson. He'd have stayed until the next GE.

The new leader will get a lot of pressure to call a GE early. I don't think the polls will every look like she is going to win but she might call it slightly early rather than going the distance to show a bit of belief/control over the situation.

The public did choose her - her constituents voted for her. As things stand you cannot vote for a Prime Minister unless you live in his/her constituency. Your vote is for your MP and his/her party.

That vacant stare of hers when she is on stage already haunts me.

I remember reading an article from a former international diplomat who had served several PMs (of different parties) and accompanied them abroad and was amazed on their attention to detail, how across all of their briefs were and how they quickly moved onto new discussion points; just how serious everything was.

His comparison to the modern political players was not a positive one, although that was predominantly aimed at Johnson.

Can’t believe Boris will leave quietly. Will probably change the locks on 10 Downing Street!
