Tiananmen Square Massacre anniversary

I was born in 1991 so this was just before my time. Horrifying to think of those innocent students fighting for democracy gunned down by their own government and the tanks crushing the bodies of the dead and hose piping the remains down the drains. Here in China, nothing was mentioned on state media unsurprisingly, Hong Kongers defied local authorities and hundreds of thousands turned out for vigils remembering those that perished.

It's (I'm not quite sure which adjective to use) - interesting, ironic or something that almost right on the anniversary of Tiananmen square, we had a US president asking if it might be possible deploy tanks on the streets of the US:
A senior administration official told the Daily Beast the president was enquiring about “the kind of hardware” that could be deployed amid protests when he mentioned “tanks” and other military units, including aircraft.

Trump pressed aides about sending tanks to quell unrest

Yeah because the US military is going to be deployed on the streets and gun down innocent people whether they're part of the protests or not. Then to add insult to injury, censor all information about it and pretend that it didn't happen, just like the cultural revolution, great famine and Great Leap Forward that killed over 70 million people combined.

America has had race and police brutality riots and protests in every decade since the 19th century. I do think some people are blowing things out of proportion a little bit, there are far left and far right extreme groups stoking up hatred and anarchy, yet thankfully they don't represent the majority. America is a democratic nation with checks and balances, it is nothing like the totalitarian state that is China which imprisons and murders those who oppose the CCP (the state). Complete chalk and cheese.

Back on to the Tiananmen Square massacre, this is likely to be the final vigil of remembrance in Hong Kong before China takes full control over the region. It is heartbreaking to see the images of thousands of Hong Kongers out to remember those gunned down who just wanted freedoms of speech, human rights and democratic reforms. It makes me shiver to think what the feat of many of the residents will be once China has its full grip over HK.

Yet you chose to live and work in China.
The big issue at the moment is world cooperation in the fight against Covid19.

Yeah because the US military is going to be deployed on the streets
I don't know if you've noticed, but they've already been deployed and as mentioned, it was Trump who was asking about using tanks. Black Hawk helicopters and Predator drones have already been in use, as well.

I was wondering when you would appear.

I first came to China when I believed it was a country heading in the right direction. Every country including our very own has a dark past and blood on their hands at some point in time. Yet the actions of China towards its own citizens, minorities, foreigners and to the outside world is a huge danger and this regime is just as power crazy and if not more dangerous than the regime under Deng Xiaoping. That's why I am leaving, the mass surveillance on its own citizens, suppression and infiltrations in western media, universities, industries, social media and even Hollywood.

It is the anniversary of one of the worst human atrocities in China and in the world and yet again you try to make this threat about me again. Great job. The world is cooperating against the fight of the Wuhan virus, but you really think China is a reliable partner to cooperate with? I mean why else would they refuse entry of CDC experts into the country, destroy samples of the virus and shut down the Wuhan lab of virology? Ever since 1949 when the CCP took control of China, it has clearly shown time after time it gives zero sh*ts about human life. It was the same in 1989 opening fire on innocent students and local Beijingers who were caught up in the protests and it'll be the same for as long as they are in power. Hong Kong and Taiwan are incredible examples of what China should be when you give them forms of democracy, rule of law and freedoms.

None of that occurred to you before moving to China?

Is that directed at me? I haven't said anything about China, other than an oblique reference.

Sorry that was meant for hopesoboro, he seems to have a bit of a fetish quoting every comment I make about China.

As for your previous post, I am aware of the national guard patrolling in some states, but refer back to the second part of my sentence when I said 'gun down innocent people whether they're part of the protests or not'. Comparing the US and China in dealing with protestors really is chalk and cheese.

It was a quite terrible time Mitch and there is no doubting that.
But why do you keep claiming to be in China. You are not in China now are you?

I am in China. I was supposed to fly back to the UK in the middle of May and my flight has been cancelled and rescheduled 3 times. I went on TalkRadio last Wednesday explaining difficulties leaving China due to flights being suspended and a number of airports shut. I'm due to fly back on July 16th now, but heaven knows if that flight will be cancelled again.

Hope you get out then! Have you tried other routes out? I often used to go Urumqi - Sharjah - taxi to Dubai- and out when I was in Xinjiang / Qinghai.

I tried looking from Shanghai, Tianjin and even Wuhan, still nothing. Lots of hubs like Hong Kong, Bangkok and Singapore have had their airports shut. I think that is changing this month, anyway I suppose I can wait it out a few weeks until July. A few friends of mine have even had trouble with domestic travel - both flights and high speed trains. It's a good job my VPNs have been working otherwise I would have gone crazy by now.

Keep your spirits up! Hadn't realised HK and BK had stayed closed.

Are you blaming the CPC?

I only recently learned that the bloke with the two shopping bags disappeared into the crowd and was never found.
