N Shropshire By Election

The interesting thing about this constituency is that whereas the Tories always win, Labour usually come second and the Lib Dems third but, the LDs have been displaced a couple of times by UKIP so although there is a healthy support for Labour that's as far as it is ever going to go and as has been pointed out on this thread there is a cap for Labour. The locals would rather lend their vote to the Lib Dems or even UKIP before voting Labour. That's the way they are.

They must all be socialists ;)

National Socialists !!

earlier this morning i was reading a thread from March about the 1% pay rise that was being offered to the NHS - reading through this thread, theres been some realignment and shape-shifting by a few.

must be ashamed of being working class tory voters with the pains and sufferings they have brought to these lands and its peoples.

I watched that interview, he basically said it's the medias fault for uncovering those issues and asking questions about them. Sounds dangerously close to a desire for a state-run media (arguably we're not far off already!)

Of course the short, and correct answer is - stop doing those things in the first place and they'll write about something else.

FWIW I think he'll hang around a while yet. Whilst last night's events are clearly troubling for the party I still think he's an asset come GE time. Only Sunak probably runs him close on electability but has a pretty big barrier to overcome with a certain Tory demographic.

I think Starmer will probably be hoping he hangs on for a while yet as Johnson looks pretty incapable and unwilling to turn the circus around.

His Achilles' heel, as far as his own party is concerned, is also his one saving grace in the eyes of most reasonably left/liberal people: he is terminally lazy. He'll say anything to get him out of actually doing something.

There’s that, bit of the unknown😉 But also Sunak has rarely been questioned apart from things related to his brief as Chancellor. You get the impression sometimes of him being a one trick pony, and something of a “talking head”
Be interesting to see him taken apart by some of the opposition members who are well up to speed on their areas of policy. Doesn’t seem that quick on his feet either. We’ll see, if he gets the gig of course.
Truss following Johnson would be perfect. Absolutely f’kn hilarious.🤣

The guy is clearly intelligent and potentially the "least-dangerous" of the potential candidates. Spending any elongated period of time in California probably rounds off the more totalitarian edges?

From Guardian Live...

Boris Johnson has said he accepts responsibility for his party’s crushing defeat in the North Shropshire byelection but also defiantly blamed the media for focusing on “politics and politicians” following a string of allegations about Tory sleaze and breaches of lockdown rules.

He claimed that the biggest problem of the last few weeks was that what “people have been hearing is a litany of stuff about politics and politicians and stuff that isn’t about them and things we can do to make life better”.

He brushed off questions about his personal responsibility for the scandals over how a Tory donor funded his wallpaper in Downing Street and the allegations of parties in Downing Street during lockdown, appearing to blame the media for focusing too much on these issues.

Asked about the Tory MPs who are warning him that he could be removed as leader if he does not get a grip in No 10, Johnson refused to answer on the grounds that it was a question about politics and politicians. He said:
"Can I remind you of everything I’ve been saying in this interview? That is exactly the kind of question that breaks the golden rule."

So the new 'golden rule' is that nobody should question him about anything he has done. This man needs to be removed now, never mind next year.

Does it not sound like a man on his last legs, desperation clutching at a straw to save himself from downing? Mixed metaphors I know but even Shakespeare liked too do that occasionally.

He is definately bolting the stable door after the milk is spilt.

I was sure the Tories were going to collapse at their fake Brexit/ vaccine peak in February, and said it vocally and got hit with a wall of "no chance".

Well, it's looking like I was more and more right by the day, but now I'm starting to worry I was too right.

I'm now kind of hoping BJ stays, and just drags them through the gutter and they would have literally no chance of winning an election outright, and very low hope of securing a coalition.

If BJ does go soon, then I think they will only go "up" and could gain momentum, calling themselves "new tories" or "the non-lying tories" etc.

I just can't decide whether I want the Tories to take more of a pasting (but then BJ going becomes a certainty), then have a chance of recovery, or for things to just calm down, BJ stay in power and they just stay "low".

This Omicron wave will likely be bad, but it should be short and sharp, and will end up as another big kick in the nuts for BJ (and the NHS again) but by Feb we will probably be over it, and have a long lead in of nothingness into the summer, which might give the Tories chance to claw some of this back.

Turnout was massively down among Tories. Clearly they thought Boris deserved a kicking and couldn't be arsed to vote.

You weren't alone Andy. I do disagree on some of your comments. Johnson doesn't get past this, the tories are ruthless. I also think that brexit has a kick out two in the **** to come.

Also bare in mind that the current scandals around the **** you parties are not entirely down to Johnson. It's starting to look endemic in the tories rather than shabby leadership.

Apparently the electorate are happy to let school kids starve but have a few prosecco whilst they are in lockdown it's THE unforgiveable crime. Go figure
