The 1st ashes test

Definitely an innings defeat. The whole match from team selection to decision on the toss has been woeful.

No Broad is shocking. Especially when you see Warner getting 94. He has the hex over him.

Leach. Where do I start? Simply not an international spinner (hardly featured at all in the summer). Such a shame that the now fully fit Rashid doesnt fancy it. Although on this performance you can see why.

Think it's a nailed on 5-0. We have almost half a team out of form (or returning from injury) or simply not good enough.

I can see us scuttled out for under 100-120 in the second innings.

I think he is just one of a number of second rate spinner options at this level.
Second worst bowling performance in test history for someone who has bowled 10 overs.
Feel for him but he bowled far too many gimmees
They'll be after him for the rest of the series now.

We always knew we would be right up against it but some of the decision making seems to have been extremely disadvantageous to our chances of getting anything.

He is very much a confidence player, which doesn’t bode at all well….

Thirteen wickets fell on day one of the tour match between Australia A and England Lions as a string of Test batting hopefuls missed their chance to push for top-level recalls.

The hosts started steadily at Ian Healy Oval in Brisbane but no batter was able to cash in, Australia A dismissed for 213 and the Lions 3-13 in reply at stumps.

Seems as though the lions are struggling too. 13-3 in reply.

Some things are out of our control, such as lack of match practice, the covid bubbles etc. But not picking the right team is just basic bad team management and really inexcusable (didn’t they do the same thing with Broad last year?).

If you are going without Jimmy cos you’re saving him then you have to go with Broad even more so when the pitch has more grass on it than an 80s football ground and your 4th seamer hasn’t played a red ball game in 12 months and is also expected to help support a very fragile batting line up.

Sometimes (well most of the time) England’s decision making just puzzles me, but on the positive we always come back strong after getting hammered in the first test, don’t we😬

They made on good point on the radio. Did they genuinely think they picked the best bowling line up for this test?

Or did they pick the bowling line up with one eye on the day/night tests so didn't pick Broad or Anderson (or both).

You have to go into the opening test of an ashes with the best 5 bowlers. You can't be thinking of 'saving them' when you could be 1 or 2 nil down.

Apart from Broads ability and ashes record he's all over warner and also has that 'needle' that really annoys the Australians. Just madness 😔

Then again the real issue is batting. What can any bowling attack do with 147 'to work with'.

The other thing with the selection was, it really took bowling first on that wicket out of the equation. Once Leach was selected if we won the toss we were always batting 1st and 3rd and hoping spin plays a factor in the 4th innings.

The Anderson decision I can get my head round as he is 39 and may struggle to play 2 tests on the spin, but there is a reason why, in the last 170 odd tests there have only been two that have not featured either Broad or Anderson (or both).

Yes definitely get the Anderson decision.

Broad was baffling. He's usually had a public moan by now when he's been dropped. Then again usually comes back fit and fired up.

We could have a bowling line up of Muralitharan/Steyn/Akram/Walsh and Hadlee and you couldn't defend 147 (just picked 5 superb none Australian bowlers who may not actually fit together😂).

Root has now got to stand down from the Captancy. He leaving anyway at the end of this series. Deciding to bat after a rain soaked week in Brisbane is beyond belief.
Get Ben Stokes in now to do the job
Who said he’s stepping down after this series?

Feel sorry for Leach and Bess, confidence must be shot to pieces as the management didn't fancy them last summer and have hardly played any international cricket in the past 12 months. Livingston and Parkinson must be better options? The Broad decision was strange after leaving out Anderson, but guess it was him or Leach as they wanted Wood's pace and Woakes/Robinson are supposed to bolster the batting.....which leads me on to the batting.....you've really got no chance when your opener gets bowled round his legs first ball and this isn't by any means the first time Burns has scored nought in a Test.....surely even Bairstow would offer more as an opener?

That is a very good point 147 might be a great snooker score but it’s a flipping rubbish cricket score 😩
