America and Gun Control

Don't know how many of you have seen this photo in the last few days....

A Republican congressman has been criticised for posting a picture of himself and his family posing with guns, just days after four teenagers were killed in a high school shooting in Michigan.

"Merry Christmas! Ps Santa, please bring ammo," the US Representative for Kentucky, Thomas Massie, wrote on Twitter.

It's sickening and FWIW I think American's are generally sick in the head given their love of weapons. Bat **** crazy.

The US is ruled by the minority.
The Democratic candidate has won the popular vote in the presidential elections in 8 of the last 9 elections I think. Thanks to the stupid electoral college, the Republicans have had the presidency more than they should.
Add in voter suppression and gerrymandering and the Democrats and their voters are up being screwed left, right and centre.
Then you have the filibuster which can be used to kill any legislation which would look to control guns.
The liberals need to take a leaf out of Mitch McConnell's book and learn how to game the system the way he has.

Apparently sales go through the roof of assault rifles (AR15s) and Hand guns around Xmas time.

I guess it's better than a pair of socks or Lynx Box set 😂

It's clearly strange to us. Yet owning a gun in America is like owning a dog. I doubt many (if any) homes won't own a variety of fire arms. I remember asking taxi drivers in florida 'do you have a gun?'. Almost all had one in the glove compartment or down the side of the seat. Just seems crackers

All though I'm all for the right to shoot someone who breaks in or threatens you. I guess the flip side is they are also probably armed.

Not sure what point they're trying to make in that photo. Why the smiles? It's just weird.

Imagine a similar photo where they're brandishing knives instead of guns.

It is very common to own a gun in the USA as in many other countries. How easy it is to get one depends upon the State and the local county within that State. For example NY has relatively harder access laws.
In NYC it is very hard, if not impossible to apply for a concealed weapon ( handgun ) unless police etc. Whereas in Long Island , one can apply but would have to expect to wait approx. one year & with a background check.
I have a shotgun ( used to shoot clay pigeons in the UK & occasionally do so out here ) & I was able to buy it by showing my driving licence ( which they used to do a criminal check ) . The whole process took less than 20 mins & I was out of the door with a shotgun and ammo. It was a very strange feeling.
There is also a very strong hunting culture in parts of the USA - it is a big country with a lot of land for people to hunt.
Personally I do not understand why someone would need an automatic rifle.

It's 2021. We're allegedly a modern society m
Is it really necessary to hunt? Especially hunting for sport (and I use that word in the loosest possible sense).

Apart from 3 or 4 family members on the West Coast, I don't have any American friends or other family on the Eastern Sea board who own a gun of any type. I know far more people in the UK who have sporting gun licences

Guns are popular in certain areas with certain people, not all areas and not all people, but yes, you can buy a gun more easily in the states than the UK

I posted this story a while back.
An American (Submariner) I worked alongside was a galloping Republican. He owned 15 weapons including six..i'll say that again SIX, AR15s. The USA calls these 'lightweight sporting rifles'. "Eddie, I said, why the fúck do you need 15 guns let alone 6 Armalite rifles?"
"For protection, and it's my right"
The other two American lads I worked with (democrats) never batted an eyelid.

Guns flood over the border and therefore are uncontrollable. But at the same time guns are just a part of society here and if the police are defunded then guess what people will take the law into their own hands as we’ve seen recently.

Thirty-two percent of U.S. adults say they personally own a gun, while a larger percentage, 44%, report living in a gun household. Adults living in gun households include those with a gun in their home or anywhere on their property. ( from a quick google search )

- that is reported , people don't talk about owning guns as a matter of course. Even with a margin of error that is a high number , maybe you should ask again. Like I said, there are lots out there & most people will own more than one.

My recent trip to Tennessee (Chattanooga) was an eye-opening experience as I never realized how much the southern states love their guns. I decided to go into the local sporting goods store for a browse and was really stunned by the amount of weapons on display. Everything from assault to pop guns was available with telescopic sights, camouflage outfits, tents and accessories— basically you could outfit a small army with the hardware they had on offer. Amusing and crazy at the same time.
