Neil Warnock

How on earth can you criticise the manager when the players lack the basic ability to pass the ball to each other?
Watching the way Coventry moved the ball compared to our pathetic attempts you would think we are Sunday league level.
Not the first time we have been shown up. QPR also showed us up with their ability to pass and move.
Our performances on the pitch were awful, keeper apart. Tav was terible both in possession, distributing the ball & his corners got worse as the game progressed

It's going to be interesting this season how it pans out, and how the fans react.

He first came in to steady the sinking ship, he did that with flying colours.

The next season (his first full season) was about stability, he achieved that. In fact he probably overachieved in the first 20-30 games to have us flirting with play offs (or thereabouts), only for us to fade away.

This season is where he should be judged. It's his squad, and this is his 3rd season (granted, second full season).

He's been backed in the transfer market and we as fans expectations have increased. The bare minimum I think we should be finishing top 8, in the hope we nick 5th/6th spot.

If come Xmas we are nowhere near the top 6, then I think the fans will turn on him.

It doesn't help when we all have been told he's only here until the end of the season. What's going to happen next season? Is he staying on? If not, what's the plan? Are we already looking at potential replacements?

So many questions us fans have that are unanswered, and that's where I think most of the frustration lies.

Good point but the fact is Warnock doesn’t play pass and move! Payero, Siliki and Sporar must be thinking WTF is this that we’re playing. Crooks seems an excellent buy but you can guarantee the first name on NW’s team sheet will be Ikpeazu!

It doesn't really matter what the playing style is. A footballer still has to be able to be able to pass the ball accurately. Surely that is a basic requirement. Along with being able to control a pass.

Warnock said that Uche was originally brought in to be third choice. Reckon he will be on the bench soon and brought on to change the game if required. Let’s hope Sporar can start scoring.

A bit of an over simplification, pretty much every pro footballer can control 95%+ of passes and accurately make 95%+ of passes. The complicated bit is finding the time and space to be able to do it in a match. That is where playing style, tactics and footballing intelligence come into it. Warnocks get the the ball forward quickly makes it hard for our forward to control the ball, they have less options to to pass to, making their passes higher risk. This is all down to Warnocks philosophy, which is at best 15 years our of date. Unless he has extremely high quality footballers, he isn't going to get any more success. Time for a trip to Samsonite for Mr Warnock

It's also interesting that he was getting better results with fewer resources at his disposal.

Seems to be the case that with some managers. Harp on about bigger squads and more players and then once they get that they loose that magic touch and go a bit allover the shop. Hope it doesn’t happen with Warnock but I am concerned. If we can win the next 2 that could be massive.

The players have to learn to play more as a team- which is what Coventry did. Better passing and movement yes. OK corners need to improve, but credit to Coventry defenders too. McNair our normal taker, of course was missing.

We know at Middlesbrough is not just the manager who puts the squad together (in our case a fit squad of 17 presently). Gibson and Bausor seem to have a big say too.

I am bit surprised with some of the comments on here:

Calling for Nigel Pearson who has really struggled at BC
Tav did nothing - He put in a beauty of a cross from a free kick in the second half that a coventry defender just flicked away for a corner and had a shot in the first half that nearly went in, OK with a slight deflection
Ikpeazu - NW has said he is not his first choice striker, Sporar has only just come and Watmore looks to me he is still getting fully over Covid19 hence its Ikpeazu starting.

The wage bill @ the Boro has come down season after season, where we may now be paying less than the average total wage bill (evidence Morsey been paid more @ Ipswich) and having a smaller squad than other teams. I still think we can do well, but it will not because we pay better or have a big squad.

It's almost like all Warnock's promotions were achieved by default then. Seeing as his teams are unable to do anything according to the fans on these pages.

HIs teams (plural) may have, in past times, able to get promoted, I just care about Middlesbrough 2021 where he's performing incredibly averagely and is firmly mid-table.

If we're going on historical performance then let's get Robbo out of retirement

You've had the knives out from day one. He might not be the one to take us forward, granted, but your constant negating of his achievements is really grating and unnecessary.

Perhaps we should've stuck with Woodgate and enjoy the free flowing football that he produced. Hey, we might even have had the pleasure of watching Bolton beat us 5-2 on our own patch in League One.

And all this baloney about long ball and can't pass a ball, I seem to remember his Notts County and QPR teams (with Taarabt pulling the strings) giving us a football lesson many a time.

However, you've made up your mind and it's your opinion and that's fine but your constant hammering of the man is out of order quite frankly.

Fully agree👏

The gaffer picks the team based on what he sees daily in training.

The manager can't do anything.... I mean 'anything' once a game starts and players can't pass 5 yards or trap a ball. I mean some of the basic football skills were simply forgotten at Coventry. It was actually embarrassing😕. That's nothing to do with coaching.

Tavs 22.... He doesn't need to be coached how to pass or control a ball (don't get me started on his corners). I say the manager can't do anything but he could have hooked him off at HT.

We played like strangers on sat. I do wonder if the sheer amount of new signings is effecting the balance and maybe 'spirit'. That doesn't excuse not being able to pass 5 yards forward.

I do think we need to settle on an identity and style of play quickly. Recent performances have seen switches in formation, personnel and style with very little by way of results.

I am naturally suspicious of managers who feel they first and foremost need to adapt their formation/style to that of the opposition. I would much rather we develop our own style and impose ourselves on the opposition (and with the likes of Siliki and Sporar coming in - players who've played at a much higher level - we should be able to achieve that).

It's almost like we stumbled upon 3-1-4-1-1 in pre-season, it worked (albeit against limited opposition) and we've stuck with it, despite the fact a few of those players have since moved on.

The recruitment offers few pointers as well - we've signed Hernandez (a winger), but he's the only fit one at the club. How many teams play with one winger?
We've still not worked out how to accommodate Crooks and he's been here for months.

It feels a little like the recruitment is trying to force Warnock's hand in terms of style of play but he's unwilling to budge?

Passing is down to probably one of three things in my opinion - either pressure from the opposition (which was clear to see on Saturday), misunderstanding the receivers position or intention (which could be the case given a few signings) or the manager - either lack of clearly communicated plans or not instilling the correct level of confidence/motivation.

What does NW work on with them in training??

You can work on formations and tactics (who marks who etc).

You can't work on getting a ball into feet and not being able to pass to a team mate 5 yards away. It wasn't even the tactics on Saturday. Just absolute basics of being a professional footballer. They have got this far in a career. You can't teach them how to control a ball or find a teammate 3 feet away😂
