Malta

I remember my nana always used to go when we were younger. It seems to have had a resurgence of late - has anybody ever been ? Do you rate it? How would it compare to Greece for example?

I don't really do beach holidays, but I've been 3 times fairly recently for work.

I get the feeling it's an older person's place and that I've done most of the sights on evenings and on weekends before travelling home.

I do like Valetta with plenty of nice restaurants, and their war museum is maybe the best museum I've been to. Snorkeling off the coast etc is good as the sea gets deep very quickly.

I would love to go to Malta, mainly to look around, read & see what the Maltese people went though during WW2 but my wife has said a few times she wouldn't like to go there

I been there so many times and I love it.

Also worth a try and visit any festivals and you’ll enjoy it. If you’re party types then go to St Julians.

You can even go to Gozo or Comino for a day by ferry BUT take my advice go early as possible because it’d be busy if going later the day etc. Speak to someone at the shop you’ll see it when they advertise it anyway. There is so many things you can do if interested doing sightseeing.

Hope this helps and enjoy your time if going there. 👍

The military history there is very interesting: basically it has a huge natural harbour in a strategically important location.

It's not just WW2 in which it played a role. It has a history in the Napoleonic wars, and also held out against the Ottoman conquest of Europe.

On more though, the city of Mdina is good for a visit. Game of Thrones fans will likely recognize it.

Went for the first time when I was a kid. Then went with my Wife and son and twice with just the wife. Loved it every time.
Got a bus from the North end to the south end of the island to visit where I had been as a young un.
Told the wife about the sleepy little village we stayed in and how lovely it is on the quiet beach of Birzebbuga. Of course over 50 years had passed and Birzebbuga is now one of the busiest free ports in Europe 😁
Still hotels and a beach but so noisy.

I went for a week a few years ago, and really enjoyed it. I'd recommend it. Stayed just outside the gates in to Valetta. Got a bus pass that went from Valetta bus station on red/green/blue hop-on hop-off tourist routes. Was very enjoyable exploring. Some modern parts with more high rise, and old historical parts.

If you're looking for a beach holiday then staying in Valetta won't be the best. Probably easier to be in one of the resorts.

If you're up for exploring/buses/sightseeing, then Valetta is a good location. Grand Hotel Excelsior was just a short walk from the Valetta 'old town' city gates, and near the bus station too. Nice views over the water from the hotel.

If you're taking a young family/kids, and you want more beach/bars then I'd opt for one of the more modern/lively resorts around the Island, like St.Julians or similar.

My parents took me over 50 years ago - it was almost still British then - everyone spoke English and they even used our currency. People there also loved the British. My Dad was stationed there in 1956 for Suez

History was fascinating there - Knights of St John defended the Island against massive Turkish attacks - out numbered over 100 to 1 and they won. The St Johns Ambulance people in the UK were formed from the Knights of St John on Malta hence the Maltese Cross in their logo. The Knights were formed to look after pilgrims to the Holy Land and made up of men from all over Europe.

The people there are mad keen on football too, like the North East.

Was there in 1976 on guard ship duties whilst serving in HMS Devonshire. We had a 6 week stint alongside in Valletta harbour.
What a brilliant time we had, I even got a 50 cent tattoo of popeye down the Gut (Straight Street). We used to spend weekends camping at Golden Bay with several crates of Hopleaf and Cisk beers, and bottles of Marzovin the only stuff that would get our campfires going !

Popeye village is good
Agreed about Mdina
Marsaxlokk (fishing village) is good there check it out
Go to the beaches (see 3 below)
Golden Bay
Mellieha
Obviously Comino.

Do check out on the website what festivals they’re doing each day/night and you won’t regret it. It’s beautiful country.
👍

Nice place. My grandad was from there and my mam was born there too

I haven’t been since I was a kid but seems like a place for a bit more of a relaxing holiday and not full of headbangers

Is the weather OK in October? This thread has made me think of going there instead of Spain or canaries for a change for our pre winter holiday
